I walk into the house as I whistle to myself. I see my dad in the living room talking on the phone. He sees me and shows his palm. I stop and he gestures for me to sit down. I walk up to the couch and sit down as I let my portfolio fall to the floor. It makes a clink noise and my dad stares at me. I mouth sorry and he nods.
"Yeah. Yeah okay. We'll be there. Bye. See you there."
He places the phone on the table and calls out for Bea. Bea comes into the living room covered in flour. I burst out laughing and my dad glares at me. I bite my lip and Bea smiles.
"Sit down love," my dad says.
"I'm covered in flour, Noah. It's okay I'll stand."
He nods and then looks at me.
"Your uncle and I are hosting a charity event today at Marconi Club. There will be a lot of people coming as you know some of who will be performing there to raise money for charity. So I booked you two a slot to sing a couple of songs."
“No way!” My eyes widen in shock.
These charity events are huge cause my uncle is the mayor and rich as hell. I've been to a few and these places are always filled with filthy rich businessmen and their wives. Sometimes celebrities come too. Never has my dad ever booked me in my entire life. This is such surprising news.
"Are you serious?" I ask still not believing him.
"Yes, Son. You can play your loud banging music. I'm sure someone will like it even though I don't. Bea can play the piano and u can play the guitar while you two sing."
My dad thinks I love edgy songs just because my band chose to play that but no one except Zayden has seen my personal songbook which doesn't have even one edgy song.
"Gosh thank you! Thank you so much!" I say and get up to hug him.
He pats my shoulders and I sit back on the couch. I look at Bea who still hasn't said anything. Just as she is about to open her mouth Katherine puts her hand on Bea's shoulder and says, "Noah why do you tell us Knick of the moment? I didn't iron any clothes for me or Hope. And what about Bea? She can't go covered in powder. Could you have not told earlier?"
"So sorry. I've been really busy and I myself only knew it this morning."
"It's fine. Hayden can do it solo," Bea says.
"I can take you home quickly and you can change," I convince.
"My stepmom will question it and it's better I don't go."
"Nonsense!" Katherine exclaims, "I'm gonna go right now and iron three sets of clothes including for you."
"No Katherine it's okay-" Katherine places her finger on her lips.
"It would be a sin if you aren't heard in front of all those people. "
Bea blushes and thanks her.
After Bea was done kneading the dough, I take her to my room. I make her sit down and take out my songbook. I give it to her and she looks at me. "This is my songbook slash journal. The front side has the songs.” She takes it and starts flipping through the pages. "You are the second person to see this. Only Zay has ever had access to this. Well and my dad who snuck into it but I don’t think he saw much."
Though she doesn't look at me I still see her smiling. "These are some pretty good songs," she says.
"Thanks."
"You had a lot of girlfriends uh?" She asks and looks up at me.
"Not many just four of them." She nods and I continue, "Many songs are for my mum and brother in there."
I stop her when she comes to a certain page and pull the book away. She looks at me curiously.
"That song is not yet over. Once it is I will show it to you, I promise."
"Not even a sneak peek?" She pouts.
"No."
"Okay."
I turn the page and point at the recent song I've written about my brother.
"Let's sing this tonight."
I come out from the shower and put on a white shirt which belongs to Zayden and I leave the top four buttons of my shirt undone. I wear my pant and shoes before I pull the black blazer over me and set it. I look at myself and smile. "Looking charming," Zayden says. My hair is styled with black wax and my teeth are flossed clean. I do a double check for all before I wear some cologne. I grab my guitar case with my boom in it and go downstairs.
My dad comes up to me wearing a grey suit and pats my shoulder. "You look charming son."
"You don't look too bad yourself dad." He chuckles and nods.
Behind him from the right I see Bea walking out of Katherine's room looking jaw-dropping. I hear my dad tell her something but I'm too busy checking her out to concentrate. A black satin dress clads her body elegantly. The dress has a nice sweetheart cut that shows off her collarbone and cleavage a little which glitters with highlighter and stands out. From the waist, it opens out into a flared skirt that stops before her knees. Her small feet are adorned with silver heel shoes that have white stones on them. As for her hair, it's straightened and left loose. She has on the chain Katherine gifted her. Her makeup is done very lightly except for her lips which stand out with red lipstick. Her jawline is sharp and perfect-
“What?” she whispers. The light brown freckles crinkle as she blushes. Her emerald eyes glow as she looks at me. I stand there speechless and shake my head. I don’t even realize that my father walked away. Bea places her hand on mine. "Hi Handsome," she says. I find myself blushing more. ”Geez man pull it together,” Zay taunts.
"H-Hi," I say in a deep voice feeling breathless.
“You okay?” She blushes and pushes her hair behind her ears.
I nod. "I just- I haven't seen anyone this beautiful in my entire life," I whisper. Her cheeks were pink by now as she shakes her head. "You look gorgeous.”
Someone coughs and Bea quickly steps back. I look at my dad. Katherine comes from behind and wraps a white shawl around Bea's shoulder. Bea thanks her. Then my dad looks at her watch and says, "It’s time. C'mon, let's go."
Without saying a word, Bea walks ahead of me. The five of us get into my dad's SUV and my dad drives. Hope and Katherine are the only ones that talk. Bea and I don’t even dare to look at each other.
When the car stops, I get down and hold the door for her. She looks around still staying in the car. She's nervous. I give her my hand and she takes it. I intertwine my fingers with her as we walk. A few paparazzi snap pictures of us. Then some bouncers show up and lead us in. I lean to Bea and whisper, "It's okay. I won't leave your side. Promise."
My uncle comes and greets us as soon as we enter. "Dominic this is Bea, Hayden's girlfriend," my dad introduces Bea and I see her going pink. I sense the tension in her and squeeze her hand.
Dominic Fenwick is my dad's only brother who is older than him. They both are like bread and butter. Always close and lovable. My uncle is the reason for my dad's success in the biz and the reason why I was able to get into Fanshawe so easily. If it wasn't for him, I would have failed my interview where the guy should have asked me questions about art to which I wouldn't have known shit. Thanks to him I skipped it and just using Zayden's drawings (which they think are mine) I got selected.
"How are you darling? You are even more gorgeous than Noah said."
"I'm good. Thank you, how are you?" Bea replied politely.
"I'm well. I can't to hear you two perform," he says and we thank him.
Then he starts having a conversation with my dad. I look around and find some people dancing in the centre. "Go dance with her," Katherine says from beside.
I nod and lead Bea to the crowd of people. I hold her hand up and wrap my arm around her waist as we start dancing. "You are going to do fine," I assure.
"I haven't sung in front of so many people," she replies still looking around at the crowd.
“Hey.” I hold her cheeks gently and make her look at me. "I know how you feel. At my first big gig, I was terrified too but then I saw my brother and I stayed focused on him for the first half of the song till my nerves started to relax and then I was rocking it. You are going to do fine too. Just focus on me." She nods.
"What if I mess up?"
"You won't. If you do, I'll back you up. Me and the guys jumbled the lyrics quite often so eventually, we learned how to back one another. " she nods.
I lean in and kiss her forehead.
"You set butterflies and fireworks inside me, Hayden Fenwick," she whispers making me chuckle.
"You make me forget how to breathe. I don’t need air when I’m with you, Bea Dason" she chuckles.
We danced for a while until we got called by my dad who introduced us to a couple of people. Then it was finally time. I hug her as I whisper into her ears, "just focus on me."
My uncle introduces us before we go on stage and take our places. Instead of standing in front, I go stand close to the Piano. Bea looks at me and I nod. I look at the crowd and see my brother standing among them. He smiles at me and shows a thumbs up. I smile and look back at Bea as I start strumming the guitar. I mouth, “you can do it.” and she nods.
Her fingers move along the piano as the words fall out like pearl drops. "Wise men say only fools rushing but I can't help falling in love with you.” She nervously smiles at me.
I join in staying focused on her and eventually we loosen up as we belt the lyrics. After that, I take my place in the front since I’ll be doing a solo next and Bea will be playing. “ The next song is dedicated to my brother Zayden,” I announce and the music starts.
We sing two more covers together and bow while holding hands. The crowd cheers. We get off stage as everyone claps. I wrap my arm around Bea's shoulders as we both make our way to Katherine. People interrupt us on the way to say we sang well and we thank them. Katherine hugs us both and gushes, “Wow kiddo that was amazing. You two were wow. I’m so proud of you both.”
My father comes up to us with a good-looking guy looking in his mid-50s. "Bea, Hayden this is Jason Kent."
Oh my gosh, this guy is the owner of a really big restaurant in London called The nightfall. Zay and I loved going there when we were little with our mum and dad.
"You both were amazing. What sync. What chemistry. I loved it," he applauds and we thank him.
"I would like for you both to perform at my hotel on Sunday night. Are you free?"
"Oh, my-Yes!” I look at Bea who nods with a smile. “It would be a pleasure, " I tell him.
“Great. See you then.”
My Dad pats my shoulder and looks at me with mixed emotions on his face. The childish grin doesn’t leave my face. "I'm so proud of you son. That was truly amazing,” he tells me and hugs me. My heart glows in warmth and I tear up as I hug him back.
