“What the f*ck did you tell her?” I ask storming into the living room. Alfonso calmly lifts his tumbler, pointing a finger at the couch. I sit down. “What did you tell her?” I ask again.

   “That’s between me and her.”

“You scared her off, didn’t you? I told you not to ask her any questions.”

He took a sip from the tumbler. “Are you willing to fight for her?”

“Of course. You know about me.” my legs shake impatiently as I run my hand through my hair.

“Good because she’s a lot of work.”

“What the hell does that mean?” I yell in agitation. Then I remember the last time I dated a girl and brought her home. Ashley loved her but Alfonso was skeptical. She kept visiting me whenever Alfonso was mentoring me. It ended with me finding out that she had a boyfriend and I was just a scapegoat to get to Alfonso.

I look at him and whisper in fear, “No... She is not like that. Teagan is different.”

Alfonso hums as he drinks the liquor. “Say something!” I snap and stand up.

“Sometimes in life comes an event that breaks a person in pieces and it is a battle to pick yourself up,” he says looking at the glass in his hand. “During such times that person shuts everyone out-“

“Yeah like you shut me out when Ashley died? I know. Teagan is going through the phase too.”

He ignores me and continues, “They do so because they don’t recognize themselves. They are not themselves. It is scary and it is going to take time for them to pick those pieces up. As they pick up the pieces, small pocket holes form allowing people back into their lives.“

“Alfonso I’m an artist, not a poet. What are you trying to say?”

He finally looks at me. “If you want to be with this girl. You gotta be patient, Son. A lot of bumps are going to come on the road and you have to be prepared. Mentally. Take care of yourself. Just see that none of this affects your mental health yeah? I don’t want you falling into depression again.” I see the genuine concern on his face.

I nod. “I will but what exactly did she tell you?”

   He smiled. “Everything right.”

   “What does that mean?”

“It means you should stop asking questions and go after her because she must be waiting for you.”

“Ugh fine. Don't tell me. But do think she loves me?”

He chuckles and places the glass down. “That's something you have to be patient and find out.”

“Ugh, why you gotta be like this sometimes man,” I groan as I grab my jacket and wear it. I walk out knowing there is no use asking him, he will just talk in riddles. I take my bike and I hear him cough. I look at him standing by the door. “She's a keeper. That’s all you need to know,” he tells me and walks away. I grin and start cycling without looking back.

I sit on the stairs as I wait for her. No one is at home and neither did she answer my calls, so I don’t know what to do. It’s almost 9 o’clock when a cab stops in front of her house. I stand up when I see her get down. At first, she doesn’t see me but when she sees me. Her face lights up and she starts running. She jumps into my arms and I lift her off her feet. “Gosh I thought I’ll never see you,” she mutters before kissing me. I put her down and hold her close as I kiss her. When she pulls away I can’t help but smile like an idiot.

“How long were you waiting here?” she asks and looks at her watch. I shrug. She shakes her head and opens the door. Grabbing my hand, she takes me in. “Let me get you something warm to drink.” I hold her hand not letting go. She looks at me. “I’m sorry.”

   "Why?”

“Alfonso, he can be a butt sometimes but he means well I swear. I don’t know what he said. Please don’t –“ she cuts me off by packing my lips.

“I’m just happy you are here,” She says and walks away.

She comes back with two cups of coffee and we sit down. “My parents won’t be back until morning. Can uhm.” She chuckles blushing so hard and I look at her in amusement. “Would you uhm you should stay over? We can order something and watch a movie? Maybe cuddle too?”

I nod in excitement. “Yes! Yes, sure.”

She sips on her coffee tryna play it cool but I see her smiling. I smile too and mimic her actions.

We end up moving the tables and laying quilts on the floor. Two boxes of pizza are set aside. 50 first dates playing on Tv. The two of us on the floor snuggled up. My arms are around her and she rests against me.

I hear sniffles as the movie comes to an end. I look at her and she chuckles as she wipes her cheeks. “I love this movie.”

   “Me too.”

We pick another movie. Halfway through, I hear soft snores. I try moving but she holds me right. Her arms are wrapped around me and her head is on my chest. So I just sit there admiring her. I brush her hair with my fingers. Girlfriend. She’s my girlfriend. My beautiful girlfriend. I kiss her head and whisper, “I love you.”
