I remove my heel shoes and sigh feeling my skin breathe again. I walk in front wanting to get to the car as soon as possible and sit down. My feet throb with every step. "Bea! Bea, wait!" Hayden grabs my hand and turns me around swiftly. I yelp in surprise. He chuckles and runs his fingers through my hair. He starts leaning forward as he whispers, "Happy new year my Bea bear."
I place my hand on his chest hissing, "We are right at the entrance."
"Fu*k 'em," he whispers making me chuckle and kisses me. I wrap my arms around his neck letting myself melt into him forgetting about my pain. He pulls me closer by my waist taking his time to kiss me. We hear footsteps and he quickly pulls away. Jason looks at us and smirks, "God bless you two," he says making my cheeks heat up. He nods and walks away. Hayden chuckles and pulls me close again.
"You know I love you right?"
"Mmm, very much and I love you too," I reply and peck his cheeks before pushing him away. "Now let's go home."
"Someone is excited for their time in bed uh?" he smirks. I smack his chest and walk away to the car. I get in and take my phone from my bag. I find 5 missed calls from Lucah and 3 from Teagan's dad. I'm just about to tell Hayden about it when my phone rings again. It's her dad again. I quickly pick up. "How long for you to pick up your goddamn phone!" he growls.
"Sorry. I'm so sorry, uncle. We silence our phones during work. It is a rule. I'm so sorry. Is everything okay?" Hayden watches me without budging.
"My apologies." His tone is calmer this time. "We are at St. Joseph's hospital-"
"Hospital? Who's hurt? Where is Teagan?" my heart starts beating fast as I imagine the worst.
"In the ER. Can you both come here now?"
"Uncle, what happened?" I ask frowning in concern. Hayden's expression mirrors mine. "Is everything alright?" he mouths. I shake my head.
"Someone tried hurting her. Lucah! Lucah has she woken up?-"
"Uncle! Uncle are you there?" I look at the phone but the call is no longer connected. I look at Hayden as my mind replays his words. Someone tried hurting her. What if it's Mira? Would she?
It takes Hayden to shake my shoulders to snap me out of my thoughts. "Bea What's wrong!?
My throat feels dry as I try to speak, "T-T-Teagan-" I don't manage to finish. I start wheezing and crying. "H-hurt." I breathe out. Hayden grabs my bag and pulls out my inhaler. I snatch it from him and take two puffs. "Hospital. Go. St. Joseph," I manage to say between every breath. He nods and starts the car.
By the time we reach I manage to calm down. "Are you okay?" Hayden ask. I nod and get down. We both run into the hospital. Hayden enquires at the reception and then leads the way. We find Teagan's parents and Lucah seated outside the ward. "What happened to her? Who did this?"
Lucah narrates what happened. "Their faces were covered so I couldn't even see who it was."
"That guy who bumped you, he isn't white?"
"He looked so but he spoke otherwise. I'm not sure."
"This happened on purpose but who? Who would dare hurt her? She has no enemies!" Hayden growled as he ran his fingers through his hair. Teagan's parents remained awfully silent. I look at them and notice that they are watching me. My heart tightens. They blame me, don't they? Lucah doesn't reply to Hayden either.
"I-is she in danger?" I ask.
Lucah shakes his head. "Thankfully no. The wound isn't deep. She was unconscious but she woke up a few minutes ago. The doctor is checking on her right now."
"When did this happen?" Hayden asks.
Before Lucah can reply, the doctor walks out grabbing our attention. "Doctor, how is she? Is she okay?" Hayden immediately asks.
"Who are you?"
"Close Friends of hers," Lucah replies.
The doctor nods. "Nothing to worry about. This young man brought her right on time and covered her wound so she didn't lose much blood," he says and pats Lucah.
"Can we see her?" her dad asks.
"Yes but don't go in as a crowd. Two maximum. She needs rest so don't keep her up too long," he advises.
Teagan's father goes with him to fill in the details and pay the bill. Right then my phone rings. I take it out, it's from an unknown number. I slide my thumb on the green button. "Hello?" I hear a ticking noise. "Hello, who is this?"
"I- Bea?- ha-" the person's voice is barely audible. Then I hear a child crying and my heart stops beating. I look at Hayden with wide eyes. "I-I got to take this. You go see her," I tell him and turn around sharply.
"Avery! Avery is that you?" I ask as I make my way out of the hospital. The crying continues. "My baby!"
"Get in the car Bea," a familiar voice says.
"What? W-where are you? Where is my child!?" I yell as I look around for her.
A white car almost bumps me. I jump back and it stops in front of me. Mira repeats, "Get in the car." The door opens and I get inside. To my dismay, Avery isn't with her. Mira looks at me smiling viciously. "Hello, darling."
"Where is my child!?" I yell and lung at her. She grabs my hand and laughs. "Give me my child please," I beg my tone dropping.
"Your child? I thought you didn't want the child? Bea. Bea. Bea. We both know what a horrible mother you are. She is in better hands with me."
"That isn't true," I whisper as tears roll down my cheeks.
"Is it? Who is the one that can't even handle a child crying? Me or you?" I keep quiet in shame. She smirks. "Thought so. See Bea, Avery was mine since the day she was born. Not yours."
"Then why did you disown her every time a rich man came along!?" I snarl. Her grip on my wrist tightens and her nails start to dig into my skin. I hiss in pain. "Stop! It hurts." Her actions make my voice come out feeble.
"Know your place. Don't you dare raise your voice slut. Do you want me to call your boyfriend's parents and tell more sweet stories about you? I'm sure they would love that."
"W-what do you want? Why are you doing this?"
"I want you to stay out of my business. That's what I want," she replies and scuffs my hand.
"I will. Just give me back my child," I tell her as I rub my wrist.
"You aren't getting the kid."
Her face, her expression, her voice, it all makes me want to slap her. She looks at me with so much venom. Yet it makes me feel weak at the same time. Then I remember I'm not alone. I remember all that Hayden has said to me. I clench my fist mustering up my courage and spit on her face. "Then I will make sure you rot in jail, once I find my kid."
"How dare you!" she raises her hand but this time I grab it. "Where. Is. My child?" I ask grinding my teeth. "My boyfriend knows where I am. You won't get away this time," I tell her just to see how she would react. Fear flashes through her eyes and this time I'm the one smirking. But the moment doesn't last for long because she starts laughing. I frown.
"Would you look at this, Pierre." She pulls her hand away. "I don't see her for one week and she grows a pair of horns." She looks at me. "Darling. Darling. Are you really going to risk your friends' life for Avery?"
"You wouldn't dare," I warn.
"Oh, but I did. Didn't we Pierre?" I look at the driver through the mirror and he winks at me. I feel disgusted and look away.
"Teagan. You hurt Teagan?"
"Uh uh and if you and your pretty little team doesn't stop your search, your boyfriend is next."
I gasp and shake my head. "No. You wouldn't. Don't. No.""You found yourself a nice family darling. As much as I want to ruin it, well I think you will do it on your own so maybe I shouldn't poke my nose right? Likewise, you don't poke your nose in mine. Let this be the last time we see each other. What do you say?"
I stay silent. The car stops. Finding me not responding, she continues, "It's time Bea. You can either get down and forget about Avery and me. Go back to your friends or." She holds out her phone. "Call the cops right now. You might get back your child. But your friends mmmm I guess your dad will keep them company in heaven."
Without hesitation, I go for the latter. I get down and Pierre takes off. I sit on the curb as I let out a sob. My baby is gone. Teagan is hurt because of me. Cool breeze flares through my nose making it hard to breathe. I keep crying as I start to wheeze. Lucah's words play through my mind. "Close friends." Close. Everyone that is close to you gets hurt. I whimper into my hands.
I don't know how long I sit there. I just stare into the distance as I eventually run out of tears. My body feels frozen and tight including my face. A black car stops in front of my view. "Fu*k Bea! What are you doing here?" recognizing the voice I quickly shake my head. I need to get away. I force myself to stand up despite how numb my body feels and start walking.
"Bea what is wrong!?" he grabs my hand.
"Go away, Hayden. P-please." My voice cracks. Fresh tears roll down my eyes and it stings my face. Guess I got frost bites. Despite my protest, Hayden pulls me into his arms. "Jeez look at you. You got snow all over you and ice on your face." He places his hand on my cheeks. His touch makes my face burn. "Ah."
"Bea- Sorry." He steps back and looks at me. Then leans down and carries me. I immediately protest. "No! Let me go!" I scream and kick my legs.
"Bea, what the fu*k is wrong with you?"
"Leave me!"
He puts me to sit in the car and gets in beside me. He turns on the heater and then looks at me. "Now tell me what happened. Who called you?"
I sigh and I tell him everything hoping he'd hate me. "You understand now why I'm dangerous. Listen to your parents! Leave me," I tell him.
He shakes his head.
"Hayden please you will get hurt next. Please let the case go. Let me go."
"What then? You will find Avery on your own?"
"No... She is better off with her," I whisper.
"Bea stop letting that lady manipulate you for fu*k sake," he growls in agitation as he runs his hand through his hair. "She can't hurt me. She won't hurt you. I won't let her."
"But she hurt Teagan! They will hate us for this. Hate you! I don't want you to get hate because of me. I can't live in that house. How will I even look at her parents after this? How will I look at Teagan? I'll just leave. It's better if just disappear..." the last few words come out in a whisper.
Hayden closes his eyes and emphasizes every word he says next, "Can. You. Stop. Just stop." He opens his eyes. "If you love me, don't push me away when you need me the most." I look at him nodding silently as I choke on my tears. He squeezes my shoulder. "I understand. But please trust me. Trust me when I say we'll figure this out." I want to protest but I don't. Hayden's eyes are filled with tears too. He is scared of losing me just like I'm scared of losing him... He needs me just like I need him, I realize and give in as I cling onto him.
