(Short chapter)

I awoke to a familiar sense of dread, a weightless feeling taking over and nauseating me to a point beyond reality. I was not really sure of how to react this time, already expecting what I turned to find.

The same control brain from my dreams, though this time they were still. Silent. Prepared for any communication.

I couldn't make out exactly why or what they were doing in my head, nor could I really tell if they were supposed to be there at all. Were they even real?

"You're afraid." The machine finally stated.

They spoke with hesitance and a glitch in their voice. It was hard to identify what gender it belonged to or even whose it may have resembled. This control brain was quiet, almost withdrawn. It wasn't what I was accustomed to when dealing with one.

"Who are you, anyway?" I finally questioned, the weightlessness no longer being my main concern.

The beings' eyes flickered gently, phasing in and out as it paused before speaking.

"It doesn't matter anymore. I'm only a shell of whomever I used to be." The muttered, voice whispy and hushed "I suppose my only solace is you being here..." they trailed off, voice lowering a little more.

"You sound like you don't remember." I observed, gently pressing for more information.

"No, I do." The machine responded instantly, "I just can't see myself as that person anymore. I might as well be someone else entirely."

I was about to speak again when they cut me off,

"You'd probably be best not knowing who I once was. It wouldn't do any good. So for the sake of simplicity, just call me C4."

I didn't know what I could do besides nod, still sort of trying to fathom exactly how I could talk to them after so many dreams were I could not before.

"Why are you here?"

The control brain placed a tendril to my lips, shushing me with careful movements as not to overwhelm me with strength they surely had. Though, if this was a dream, why could I feel their touch?

My questioning gaze clearly did not go amiss, their metallic wire moving from my lips to my arm, dragging me along the hallway. I was almost certain this weirdly coloured control brain wouldn't hurt me, though I couldn't understand why I felt that way.

"I'm here to protect you." They trailed, noticing my skeptical expression as they said it, "believe me when I say, it's in both our interests."

"Why?"

They paused again, grip on my arm, loosening slightly as if losing their own grips on reality.

"The less you know, the better." The static of their voice was more distorted this time, almost like they were choking on their words, forcing them up from whatever they had instead of a gut.

They became a little more stiff after that, even for a machine. Their movements were more jerky and far less fluid than before as they continued to pull me through corridors and rooms. All seamlessly reminded me of the massive.

As awful as my time on that ship was, I had a strange fondess for it. The vessel itself was fun to explore. Not so fun to navigate but the size gave me a lot of room to walk around and find things to do when I was bored. Not to mention my friends.

I wondered if they were okay, praying that every one of them had not been part of the control brains search. In fact, I was so involved with my own safety that I didn't even stop to wonder if my friends were okay. And that in itself was enough to get me asking questions again.

"Are my friends okay?"

They tensed even more, which I almost thought was impossible. Still, I waited patiently for their answer.

C4 stayed quiet for a long time, even slowing their pace to wherever we were going.

"...that entirely depends," they finally forced out, glitched voice lowering significantly to a quiet digitalized tone.

There was something extremely sentient in their response. Something alive and feeling and......hurt.

But as much as I was beginning to feel for this....whatever they were, I was still too concerned by their words.

"Depends on what?"

The control brain continued down the hallway, gently tugging me as my vision began to change.

The scenary around me started to fade, some kind of indicator to my awakening state and pulling me back into consciousness. I fought to stay asleep, still anxious to hear some sort if answer as I was still being dragged, the noise around me becoming muffled and the imagery becoming dark.

"Simply put..." The control brain begins, seemingly unaware of my awakening.

All I could think was for them to hurry with their answer.

"It all depends on you." They finished, voice dimmed and muffled harshly as everything went black.

I awoke immediatley, piled on the same crates as always and still processing my thoughts.

As fake as I'm hoping these dreams are, I am still cautious. If they have any semblance of value, then I have to keep them in mind. Especially if what I just heard is true.

"My friends wellbeing depends on me?"
