Racked with terrible neck pain, I woke up, blinking my eyes, my vision was blurry. Was I still alive? Jimin's warm hand still clung to mine; we hadn't let go even when we were unconscious. But was he unconscious? Panicking, I wiped my other hand over my eyes, trying to refocus them, and then looked beside me. He looked completely unharmed, and since his hand was still quite warm, he should still be alive. Just to be sure, I felt for a pulse on his neck, and his heartbeat seemed strong and steady. Carefully, I released myself from his grip and looked around. Nothing seemed to be on fire, no smoke or smell of gasoline. Everything appeared normal from here, so I unbuckled myself and tried to see if I could stand. Aside from the pain that I had already felt while sitting, I couldn't find anything wrong with me, so I probably wasn't seriously injured. Jimin also didn't seem obviously injured at first glance.
Next to the galley, I went to the row of safety seats and checked on the other members who were mostly unconscious as well. At least at first glance, I didn't see any blood or anything else indicating open wounds, which was a good sign. The medical student in me immediately switched into doctor mode, even though I wasn't quite there yet; my internship was supposed to start in three months. So, I had to rely on my theoretical knowledge for now. Fortunately, it was enough to check the guys' vital signs and see that there didn't appear to be any internal injuries—at least as far as I could tell without an MRI.
After that, I ran towards the front and examined the manager who was twisted in his seat. With horror, I realized that his neck was broken; he had no pulse anymore, wasn't breathing, and had already started to grow cold. Guilt flooded over me for not bringing him to the back, and tears welled up in my eyes. Deep down, I knew that I couldn't have helped him; there simply hadn't been another seat available. Then I half-died from the guilt, thinking that thankfully no BTS member had died instead of him. Trying to keep a clear head, I pushed back the sobbing that was stuck in my throat and opened the door to the cockpit, only to freeze in absolute shock at the terrible sight before me.
The co-pilot had been impaled by a branch hanging from the massive tree that had stopped the jet during the landing, likely causing the impact. But that wasn't the worst thing I saw. The pilot had been cut in half, by the glass of the windshield, which was supposed to be made of safety glass, but clearly wasn't in this case... Both of them were obviously dead, but I had to make sure by checking their pulse and breath, and as expected, there was nothing. Taking a deep breath to calm myself next to two severely damaged bodies was not a good idea because the smell of blood and intestines turned my stomach, and I leaned out of the opening left by the shattered windshield and vomited. After wiping my mouth with my sleeve, I surveyed the surroundings.
Apparently, we had crash-landed on a beach that ended at a forest-covered cliff, which had put an end to our improvised runway. The sand had slowed us down quickly, cushioning the impact and likely saving our lives. Unfortunately, those three people at the front hadn't been so lucky. After closing the cockpit door, I slid down to the floor and finally let out loud sobs that I had been holding back with great effort...
