With my hands covering my face, I sobbed quietly, unsure if my tears were more from relief of still being alive, from the hopeless situation we were in, or from having just discovered three dead bodies. These weren't the lifeless bodies we had seen on the dissecting table during our studies, nor were they donated cadavers. They had never been real people to me... but just a few hours ago, I had talked to each of these individuals, they had smiled at me, and now I knew what two of them looked like from the inside...
"Hey... are you okay? Are you hurt?" I heard someone beside me say, and a hand rested on my shoulder. Shaking my head, I continued to sniffle. After holding myself together so tightly, I was now completely falling apart. I was pulled into comforting arms, against a strong shoulder where I could lean on, and for a moment, I felt safer than ever before. If I interpreted the voice correctly, it was Jin who was currently hugging me.
"No, not really... but... the pilots... and your manager... they didn't make it..." I sobbed, and I heard him gasp in horror. His head turned towards where the manager had been sitting, and from the shocked gasp that escaped his lips, I knew he had just realized the situation. Now he clung to me just as tightly as I clung to him, and my shoulder where he rested his head became damp.
"We need to go outside and check the plane. It doesn't look like it's on fire or leaking fuel, but we need to make sure..." I said about 10 minutes later when we had somewhat composed ourselves. He let go of me and nodded before wiping away his tears with his sleeve and standing up.
"Your friends are just unconscious; it doesn't seem like anything happened to them. I already checked them," I reassured him, and then I opened the door before extending the mechanical stairs with the lever next to it.
"Maybe we'll find help outside," Jin pondered hopefully, but I shook my head. "If this island were inhabited, there would be a small airstrip here... if there was even a populated island nearby, the pilots would have chosen to land there instead of taking the risk of landing here." I knew a lot; Mina told me so much about what she had learned in her profession, and I didn't watch Mayday - Air Crash Investigation for nothing. Jin nodded dejectedly and then examined the plane with me. Thankfully, it was only dented at the cockpit but seemed intact otherwise, with no signs of fire anywhere.
"Yes, that sounds plausible... but what do we do now?" he asked me, and I pondered.
"Hoping for the signal from the black box and checking the radio works... and should bury the dead because of the risk of infection that corpses carry. That's not to be underestimated... this is a humid tropical climate, and decomposition will start very quickly," I explained, feeling my stomach turn at the thought of having to remove the bodies. Feeling dizzy, I collapsed onto the warm sand and sat there for a moment.
"Wait, I'll get you some water," Jin said caringly, realizing that I wasn't feeling well. A minute later, he returned with Namjoon in tow, who seemed to have woken up by now but appeared slightly disoriented as he sat down beside me. Jin had three water bottles with him and gave one to each of us.
"We should probably count and ration these as well..." I suggested, and Jin nodded while Namjoon stared blankly at the ground. He must have seen the dead manager on his way out...
