camp half-bloodKiwáni's mother was right, both she and Chris were more safe at camp. Just as she and her stepmother had dropped the pair off at the airport, they had been attacked by giant bloodthirsty ants. Myrmekes, Chris had called them. Apparently there was a hoard of them living below the Phoenix airport, stealing items from TSA agents and the lost and found.
The girl almost fainted when one grazed her leg unknowingly. As Kiwáni looked down, she first saw a large black suitcase, something she was sure was not there before. Right before her very eyes the object morphed into a larger-than-ever insect, its beady eyes staring right up at her. That was when Kiwáni screamed and smashed her suitcase into its head. The pair quickly rushed on their flight after that.
Arriving to camp was a relief to both the Rodriguez kids. Kiwáni had spent most of the van ride to camp avoiding eye contact with the driver, a man who seemed to be covered in multiple sets of eyes. Chris was knocked out in the seat beside her, mumbling lightly about a flag game and some dude named Travis.
When the van finally stopped at the bottom of a large hill in the middle of nowhere, Kiwáni basically jumped out. Hastily picking up her stuff, the girl rushed to follow Chris, who was already scrambling up the hill at a fast pace, towards a large pine tree. Once she reached the top, the brown-eyed girl could make out a sign stating the camp's name: Camp Half Blood, written in what seemed to originally ancient letters of some sort.
Once Kiwáni stepped through the threshold, the scene in front of her completely changed. There seemed to be fields of strawberries and sweetgrass for miles, along with a collection of buildings varying in size. People, both younger and older than her, walked around leisurely. Kiwáni was sure that she spotted a large climbing wall, with what seemed to be lava running out of the top.
