war games

When the new sword fighting instructor brought up the idea of practicing battle techniques, everyone at camp seemed interested. The aura at camp had definitely changed. No longer did it feel appropriate to sing along around a fire, or play friendly games of capture the flag. No, there were real threats on the rise, and real consequences if they were not properly prepared.

It was why Kiwáni found herself supporting a full set of Greek armor, with her quiver strapped across her chest and her sabre slung across her waist, at 8 at night. She and the rest of the older campers had gathered in the sword fighting arena, circled around Quintus, who was eerily followed by a slightly less-than intimidating Hell Hound. The girl absentminded rubbed at her burn scar out of nervousness.

"You will be in teams of two," the older man announced, sipping on a flask he pulled out of nowhere. He let out a small chuckle once people began to scramble closer to their friends.

"Which have already been chosen!"

A few groans were heard, but effectively silenced.

"Your goal is simple: collect the gold laurels without dying. The wreath is wrapped in a silk package, tied to the back of one of the monsters. There are six monsters. Each has a silk package. Only one holds the laurels. You must find the wreath before the other teams. And, of course... you will have to slay the monster to get it, and stay alive."

Kiwáni nodded her head, mulling the task over. Seemed pretty straightforward.

The girl looked to her left, and made eye contact with Annabeth, who pulled at her upper lip through her teeth in concentration. Once she felt the daughter of Apollo's stare, the younger girl held up her hand, showcasing her crossed fingers. Kiwáni nodded in response.
