the songs of the sirens

After telling her friends about her weird dreams, they were understandably upset at Kiwáni.

"Why wouldn't you tell us!" Percy cried out. Annabeth was silent, but the daughter of Apollo could almost see the cogs working within the younger girl's brain.

Kiwáni did not have anything of help to say. "I don't know! Maybe because I don't even know what it means!"

She took a deep breath, and let it out, trying to calm her raising heart beat. "I didn't even know I had met them before until like a week ago!"

She then turned to Percy, who seemed to be the more the angry of the two. "And you've told us every weird dream you've had?"

The boy averted his eyes, but did not fight back. Annabeth was still mumbling to herself, putting pieces together that Kiwáni was not sure had to do with the situation at hand.

"There's somebody out there that will pay big bucks for you! That's something you tell others, so you don't go missing!" Percy restated.

"Yes, and I'm sorry," Kiwáni sighed. "Maybe I wanted to figure it out on my own."

The girl felt ganged up on, even though only one person was reprimanding her for her own behavior.

"But you'll never be on your own," the son of Poseidon insisted. "Not while I—we're here."

He gestured to Annabeth, who was now tuning in to what they were saying. She gave a nod of approval at Percy's words.
