the sun west lineRacing back to the van, the six of them piled back into the vehicle, with Zoë once again flooring the accelerator and squealing out of the park lot. As they made their way onto the main roads, Kiwáni looked out the window. There was a helicopter, a black military model, just floating in the air. The flying copter soon turned into their direction, making the daughter of Apollo nervous. The helicopter looked similar to the one they'd seen at the military academy in Maine.
"We have to ditch the van," she mumbled. She got a look to Zoë, who simply nodded.
The girl swerved into the fast lane, sending everyone to the left with a groan.
"How can the General use mortals, anyway?" Percy asked, leaning up between the two front seats.
"Mercenaries," Zoë said bitterly. "It is distasteful, but many mortals will fight for any cause as long as they are paid. Sometimes mortals can be more horrible than monsters."
Thalia closed her eyes and leaned against the back of her seat. "Hey, Dad. A lightning bolt would be nice about now. Please?"
The group all looked up at the sky, which stayed gray and snowy. No sign of lightning, or even a thunderstorm.
"Wait!" Bianca shot up from her seat behind Zoë. "That parking lot!"
"We'll be trapped," Zoë said.
"Trust me," Bianca said. Her voice was more confident than ever.
Zoë shot across two lanes of traffic and pulled into the mall parking lot. The six of them jumped out of the van, following Bianca down some alleyway steps.
