the big oneWhen March rolled around, Kiwáni felt as through there was a constant storm cloud above her head. Her days were continuously lackluster and the following nights were filled with the mysterious whispering she could not seem to drown out.
Helios seemed to have made a home in the girl's head, as she was now never without the god's velveteen voice seeping into her own thoughts. Never threatening, but never stopping. It was though she was never truly alone.
The sheer paranoia the daughter of Apollo sometimes felt made the girl resistant to close her eyes.
Kiwáni's moods had shifted after the events over break, much to both her friends and her mother's chagrin. The girl, although still smiling and sarcastic as ever, seemed quieter, more reserved. Clarisse had watched the girl space out entirely in a conversation surrounding the daughter of Ares's SAT test, it taking a sharp punch in the shoulder to bring the daughter of Apollo back to Earth. And even then, Kiwáni returned back to staring dazedly at the painted stars that littered the coffee bar's walls after a few minutes.
She talked less about what was happening in her life outside camp and school, instead spending more time in her room. Alone, with the door locked from the inside.
One night, her mother Lucía was sure she heard voices echoing from behind the painted door as she traipsed through the house in the middle of the night. Other worldly sounds and spindly imitations that sent chills down the older woman's spine. But as her own thoughts surrounding a drink of water were silenced, so were the reverberations through the door. As if they were warded off by the soft pattering of slipper-covered feet.
