the rise and fall of immortality

Rachel led the five of them to a large building right off the highway. The old-looking font read Western Museum of Mining & Industry, but the building as a whole really did not look like much.

"There." Rachel pointed to a hole in the side of a nearby hill—a tunnel that was boarded up and chained. "An old mine entrance."

"A door to the Labyrinth?" Annabeth asked. "How can you be sure?"

"Well, look at it!" Rachel said. She pointed to the padlocks on the door, and sure enough, there was an engraved mark of Daedalus.

Percy reached forward and lightly touched the chains, and they fell away with a cloud of gold dust. Annabeth kicked down the remaining boards covering up the entrance, and the five of them walked into the Labyrinth once again.

As they made their way back through the interconnected maze of rooms and corridors, Kiwáni found herself next to Percy and Nico. Both Annabeth and Rachel had struck up a conversation about architecture and art, so the daughter of Apollo thought they might enjoy the seemingly only positive interaction the two of them alone.

The three of them walked for a bit in uncomfortable silence, until Kiwáni broke it with a sigh and a shake of her head.

"Thanks for coming after us," she spoke softly.

Nico's eyes narrowed. He didn't seem as angry as he used to—just suspicious, careful. "I owed Percy for the ranch, so I basically had to come back. Plus... I wanted to see Daedalus for myself. Minos was right, in a way. Daedalus should die. Nobody should be able to avoid death that long. It's not natural."
