the boat ride back

Kiwáni fell asleep still clutching the mane of the hippocampus giving her a ride. The monotonous, bumpy stride of the animal reminded the girl of the horseback riding she and Clarisse would do back in Arizona, and it calmed her previously active mind. However uncomfortable the position was, the daughter of Apollo's need for sleep conquered all. The girl was then only awoken by the whinnying of the hippocampi, their sudden distress shaking her out of her slumber.

"What... what's going on? Where are we?" the girl mumbled, rolling her neck to try and relieve the tension building on her shoulders. The weird angle was causing the daughter of Apollo to feel incredibly stiff.

"Miami, I think," Annabeth answered. "But the hippocampi are acting funny."

Kiwáni looked around, and the younger girl was right. The four hippocampi were now swimming in circles, crying out and whimpering. She reached out, and stroked the mane of the animal below her, hoping to offer it some comfort.

"Stop moving," a voice mumbled, its breath tickling the girl's neck.

The daughter of Apollo froze for a second, not fully understanding what was going on. But once looked down, and recognized the hands wrapped around her waist, Kiwáni relaxed her posture. Percy mumbled something she could not decipher, and pulled away to better understand their situation. He paused for a moment, and then turned to Annabeth.

"This is as far as they'll take us," he said. "Too many humans. Too much pollution. We'll have to swim to shore on our own."

Kiwáni groaned. "But I don't wanna swim in that either."
