the dream caveThe seasons in Arizona can only be described with one word. Temperamental. People often assume that the weather is always sunny and warm, and although it is definitely warmer than other parts of the United States, there is still snow on the ground during the winter. Especially in Northern Arizona, where Kiwáni happened to live.
Her tribe had the belief that the sun slept during the winter, and that was the reason for the short winter days. Kiwáni just thought Apollo most likely got lazy during the cold months.
Speaking of, Kiwáni had not yet met her father, Apollo. She had heard stories of him from her brothers, who told her about the numerous times Apollo had appeared in their dreams, and could not help but feel disgruntled. The girl had went on two life-changing, death-defying quests, and not heard a peep of gratitude or recognition from her father. She would have even taken some prideful boasting about her abilities. But nothing. She had heard nothing.
Her thoughts surrounding her father always circled back to a dream the girl had a few years back, when she and her friends recovered Zeus's lightning bolt. At the time, it had been a confusing one where her mother stated that she would 'be meeting her father soon'. But that had been more than a year ago, and nothing seemed to have changed. How soon was soon? Or had she been referring to something else?
Kiwáni thoughts wandered as she trekked through the Grand Canyon, waiting for her mother to finish her shift. The girl aimlessly hiked through the trails that had come second nature to her, barely looking at the ground below. Humming to herself, she allowed her mind to go blank, and for her intuition to lead her through the surrounding trails. The girl had spent much of her childhood here, just walking around. She was sure she would have no trouble finding her way back.
