the betrayal

Kiwáni thought Luke's betrayal hit her hard, but she had not thought about how Chris would take it. Her cousin practically went mute, refusing to talk about the situation with anyone. From her frequent Iris messages with Clarisse, apparently he had locked himself in the Hermes cabin, and barely left for anything except meal times. He barely talked to the other campers, and was seen even less. Even Connor and Travis were having trouble communicating with him, though they were having their own difficult time with 'the Luke situation'.

What really made the daughter of Apollo worry was when Chris stopped responding to her letters. What had once been filled with inside jokes and funny scribbles turned into nothing. Kiwáni was the only way her Aunt stayed in the loop with her cousin's activities, as their relationship became rocky after he started staying at camp full time. But now the girl had nothing to say when the woman asked basic questions about her son.

The daughter of Apollo was extremely worried about her cousin. Kiwáni knew that he had looked up to Luke, he had been the oldest person at camp besides Mr D. and Chiron. But more importantly, Luke was his brother. They did everything together, they had a bond she had previously admired, and hoped for with her own brothers. Yes, she and her brothers were close, but they could not compare to Luke and Chris. Those two had always been one and the same.

That was the reason Kiwáni flew out to camp early, on her school's spring break in March. She had somehow convinced her stepmother Lizzie, who had then convinced her mother, that the visit was necessary. She needed to see how Chris was doing, to answer her Aunt's questions, and maybe convince him to come back home for some quality air and relaxation.
