the big arch

The group travelled west on the Amtrak train, watching the countryside fly by through the big windows. Grover and Annabeth in particular were glued to the glass, watching as the green hills rolled by. Kiwáni tried to catch up on her sleep, as being in the public eye meant they were safe enough. As she rubbed at her eyes she looked to her right, where Percy crouched over a newspaper, frowning. The girl scooted a little closer, and peered over his shoulder.

Before the boy could pull it away, she caught a glimpse of a terrible picture of the son of Poseidon from the Greyhound bus, his sword creating a huge blur of metal. The Percy in the picture looked wild, his eyes ablaze with a fury she had not clocked during the situation. Kiwáni placed her hand on the page, stopping the boy's movement to crumple it up.

"I wouldn't worry. The mortal police aren't shit. Especially when it concerns people like us."

Percy snorted. "I'm not worried about them. I'm worried about this." He pointed to the last sentence.

His stepfather, Gabe Ugliano, has offered a cash reward for information leading to his capture.

Kiwáni laughed a little, but stopped at the side eye Percy gave her. The older girl held up her hands in mock defeat. "I didn't know you had a stepfather."

Percy laughed darkly. "Barely. The dude just sits in my mom's apartment and wastes her money gambling. He's probably not even worried about her, just about his stupid Camaro I crashed." He paused, and his tone turned more sad. "I don't know why she married him."
