the military school danceWhen Grover had contacted her about potentially finding two powerful demigods at a military school in Maine, Kiwáni was a little unwilling to help. His message pleaded for extra help to bring children to camp, which normally the girl would agree too. But it was December, and she and her family were in the middle of the most important Hopi celebration. It was Kiwáni's favorite time of the year, and her friends did not understand the holiday to know the significance.
Decembers in Arizona was the time of the Soyal Ceremony, and had always been an important time of year for the girl. It reminded the girl and her people of how important the idea of hope was, and connected them to their ancestral roots. And as a daughter of a sun god, she could not help but feel connected to the role she and her people play.
But it was the first Soyal without Chris. The mere thought of celebrating anything without him made Kiwáni sick to her stomach.
So Kiwáni agreed anyway, a little disgruntled she would be missing out on the festivities. The girl booked the earliest fight on route to Maine, watching out the plane window as the snow fell. When she landed, and was subsequently picked up by Sally Jackson, the snow on the ground had grown from a slight dusting into a more collected pile. About five or six inches laid on the ground, with more still falling through the air. It was more snow than she had ever seen.
It was not hard to pick Sally Jackson out of a crowd, she looked exactly the way Percy Jackson had described her. A large smile, flowing hair, an air of warmth. Kiwáni could see why her friend was so attached to his mother. The thought made the girl smile, and squeeze her eyes shut in anticipation.
