"You've done a very thorough job. I just think that I'll take it from here. Goodbye." Tess hangs up as I enter her office. "Brianna." She stands up. "It's very nice to see you well. I heard about your heart attack a few weeks ago. How are you feeling?"
"I'm well, Tess, thank you." I nod.
"How are things over at Gotham? I read about Jerome Valeksa being on the loose again. He was brought back from the dead."
"Yeah, he was. Now he's in Arkham."
"You took him down like you did three years ago. I would like to give my condolences about Commissioner Essen. And for the all pain Jerome had caused for you and the rest of the GCPD."
"Thank you."
"So what can I do for you?"
"I planned on staying here to make amends with some friends, and I stumbled upon this." I hand her a paper.
"An article." Tess starts to read it.
"I found a stack of missing-persons cases that no one's talking about. There are similarities between them all. This city is being attacked, and no one seems to care."
"Kind of makes you wish Ghost and the Red-Blue Blur wasn't sitting down on the job."
"I think that these people were attacked by the same criminal. I'm gonna look into it, but you and Miles could be the first to break this story. You can warn the people of Metropolis."
"I can't print this."
"You need to print it."
"No, they're called facts, and I don't think you have any."
"You don't care about these victims? You're sweeping this under the rug." I inquire.
"Great. Another conspiracy theory, cause I love those." Tess remarks. "Look closely. You will not find a web of lies behind this facade, Captain Brady. That would be your friend Miles's job."
"Miles Devroe is a good reporter and good writer. And he's one of the best people I've ever known. He's my brother." I look her in the eyes. "I know he may be just some middle class citizen to you, but he's so much more than that." I turn.
"So I guess I could say that every time you look at me, you see Lex?" Tess questions and I stop. "Call us even, then?"
"Lex Luthor is dead to me!" I shout. "He has been for a long time. Even before he got blown up."
"What did Lex do to you?" She walks over to me.
"Doesn't matter what he did to me. It will never amount what he did to Lana. What he took away from me the night she left Smallville."
