I Wanna Be Yours: Arctic Monkeys
"And I'm truly sorry, Brianna, believe me, I am. But it's not your first time losing a father. You'll find some other poor sap to take care of little Dominic. As for your mother, well, you only get one of those!" Jeremiah's voice goes through my ears as I keep my gaze forward while tapping my finger against the ledge of the car.
"It's lucky that Tess sent us out here to cover the Cherry Festival." Clark breaks the silence.
"You're an idiot." I keep my gaze forward.
"I didn't want you in the middle of tonight's anti-hero protest."
"So, what, you're gonna lock me in a castle tower like I'm some damsel in distress?"
"No. Brianna, I just wanna make sure that you're safe."
"I don't need protection. And I am safe."
"Brianna-"
"I don't care what people think of me. Of us. Hate is easy. I learned that a long time ago." I still keep my gaze forward and the tire goes out, making Clark stop.
"I didn't even see what we hit." Clark says as we head out of the car.
"Probably a rock, or a screw. It happened when I was seven. My mom was is in a hit and run and Dominic was on the phone while driving with me in the back. He took the wrong turn down the road that was in the middle of being done. Almost go into an accident ourselves." I walk to the trunk. "Bastard couldn't focus on his offspring for five minutes." I grab the tire before slamming the trunk in rage. "So you know what I did? I cursed him out and I walked all the way to the hospital. Four miles." I start chanting the tire. "No bus, no train, no cab, just me. And that was the moment I realized that I never needed him for anything. Ever. Never needed to rely on him. And I was okay with it. After I pushed myself to be." I grab the old tire and stand back up.
"Oh, praise the Lord! You're okay." A girl with a bonnet rushes over to us.
"Yes, we are, thank you for asking, love." I put on a British accent.
"Okay, it's nothing a mechanic can't fix." Clark takes the tire from me. "Do you know where there's one by?"
"Um, up the road a bit. In Meeker Springs." The girl with the bonnet tells him.
"Thanks. Alright, Val, well, we'll leave now, we'll be back in a flash."
"Oh, but, Clark, I'm such a delicate flower, I will...I will wilt in that heat. I think I'll just stay with um.." I turn my head.
"Charlotte, ma'am. I got some fresh squeezed lemonade if you'd like." The girl tells me.
"Lovely, so we will have a big glass as we damsels in distress wait for Clark to come rescue us." I cross my arms with a grin and Charlotte walks off.
