Dust: The Neighbourhood
"I'm so sorry, Adam. If you choose not to believe me, I accept that. I just couldn't live with myself if kept the truth from you." I choke out.
"I believe you." Adam tells me. "My father, he...he wasn't always the nicest man. I knew he spent too much time upstairs, but I didn't think he could..."
"I know. It's okay. It's not your fault."
"And it's not yours either. You did what you had to do. My father would've killed you. And you're one of the few good cops left in the place. You have honor, and respect, and morals, and you always try to do the rugby thing. And you make the hard decisions when nod one else can. I saw that the day you took down Jerome on the broadcast. Thank you for your, service, Detective Brady." He holds out his hand.
"Brianna, please." I shake it. "Do you have any other family to stay with?"
"None that I talk to."
"How old are you?"
"Sixteen."
"I have an apartment with my dad and brother a few blocks down. It's the white awning. You can stay there for the meantime. I'll see you later and we can work out your living situation."
"Thank you so much, Brianna."
"I'm sorry about your father." I squeeze his shoulder before walking towards mg desk.
"Detective. Detective Brady." An Asian says from inside the cell. "Yoo-hoo. Detective. Detective Brady. Chaz Carmichael."
"Congratulations." I sit down at my desk.
"Boss ain't gonna be happy I'm in here. Let's say I got a lot of responsibility in my organization."
"Yeah, you seem like a real responsible guy."
"My boss is Sofia Falcone." He whispers.
"Oh, yeah?" I get up and head over to him. "What's that gotta do with me?" I fist his shirt.
"Easy. All I know is she told me if I ever got pinched, to tell you to tell your dad to give her a call."
"Is that so?"
"You can't do this. I got rights."
"Oh, yeah? How about you exercise your right to remain silent." I shove him back.
