THE FIREHOUSE wasn't the same without Boden, and everyone felt that.
Riddle gathered them in the meeting room, and they hated every moment. Melisa sat beside Hermann, trying to be positive, but everything was going wrong. She couldn't stop thinking about Donna and the baby.
"The problems Chief Boden faces are regrettable," Riddle spoke. "Our thoughts are with him as he deals with his private legal matters. But those thoughts are for outside these walls. In here, we have sworn to put our own personal troubles aside and focus on protecting the citizens of Chicago."
He looked around the room, glancing at every single one of them. "Now, in order to do that, we have to have unassailable leadership. Which is why it is my honor to name Dallas Patterson the new Battalion Chief for Firehouse 51."
Some of them glanced at each other in confusion or shock. The lieutenants looked at each other. They couldn't believe this was happening.
"Come on up here, Chief, collect your bugles."
Patterson walked up to Riddle. "Thank you, sir."
Riddle started clapping. His expression showed that he expected them to applaud as well, which they did, but it wasn't enthusiastic.
"I'm not blind," Patterson spoke. "I know all of you are unenthusiastic about these circumstances. I can't do anything about the past. What I can do is affect the future. Professionalism, respect, and attention to detail. These are the small things that we can focus on to get 51 back on track. I'm asking you to trust me. I can't do this alone."
Something about how he spoke seemed sincere, but Melisa still didn't trust him. "All right, let's get out there and have a great shift."
