"YOU HEAR ANYTHING from the Chief, Lieutenant?" Hermann asked Casey, when he walked into the common room area. "I went by his office. The lights were out."
Casey dropped a book on the round table and went to the coffee pot. "Left a message. Said he'll be here in a couple of hours."
"Is everything okay?" Melisa asked, curious. She just hoped the Chief was okay.
"Far as I know. Why?" Casey sipped his coffee.
"Eighteen years I've been crawling hallways with the guy, and never once has he been late to shift. That guy's the Cal Ripken of the CFD," Hermann responded.
Gabby entered the room. She put up two posters on the board. "Silent auction for the charity gala kicks off again, and all the proceeds go to help young burn victims." She turned and gave them a pointed look. "So don't be cheap asses."
Cruz walked up to the kitchen counter where Tony and Capp stood. They were getting something to eat. "Four-man squad today."
"More drills for everyone," Capp stated in a monotone voice, obviously unhappy with the idea.
Cruz agreed. "Severide dodged a bullet."
Patterson approached them, and it looked like he had taken that comment very personally. "I'm not expecting a Christmas card, and I don't give a damn if you like me, but you will respect the rank."
The guys on squad stared back at him. "Understood?" Patterson added. They nodded their heads just before the alarm went off.
They rushed down to the scene and were quickly updated on the situation. A man had been driving a motorcycle, and to avoid a truck, he hit the curb and fell through a window. Except he didn't fall all the way through. He was stuck in the frame with glass in his abdomen.
Melisa followed Casey into the building, and they were all under the impression that he was dead. That was until they approached the victim and heard him gurgle two words. "Help me." Blood poured out of his mouth.
Melisa froze for a second before she started comforting the man. "Take it easy. We are here to help." She crouched down so he could see her.
Casey stood up. "I need some help in here!"
The paramedics entered with Patterson on their tails. Brett crouched down next to Melisa to check on the victim. "Shallow breathing, rapid pulse."
