ON THEIR NEXT SHIFT, they were called back to that neighborhood that had blocked the road, which led to a man dying.

"No one blocking the road this time," Mouch commented. The road was clear, and they were able to drive right through.

Upon arrival, they spotted a man lying on the ground, and his leg was crushed. They got out and started clearing the scene— getting people to back away and give them space to work.

Melisa and the rest of truck followed Casey. He went up to the woman. "Talk to me."

"My husband, he was unloading the thing." The woman frantically glanced between the firefighters and the lieutenant as she tried to explain what happened. "It just fell."

"What's your name?"

"Tricia."

"Okay, Tricia, let's take a look." The firefighters stood back as Casey approached the victim. "I'm Lieutenant Casey. What's your name?"

"Steve."

"What happened here, Steve?"

"Cable snapped," he was strained— understandably so. The paramedics were by his side immediately, ready to help him. "Doesn't hurt as much as you'd think."

Casey tried to keep the conversation going as the paramedics worked, but Steve passed out.

Casey assigned Jimmy to stay with Tricia and keep her calm and updated.

After observing the scene, Patterson comes up with a plan. "All right, we're gonna need 4x4 cribbing and airbags," he told the firefighters. "We've got to dig around it, create a big enough gap to lift up the pod and slide his leg out."

Melisa ran up to the truck with the other firefighters, grabbed the cribbing and airbags, and ran back. They had to move fast. The guys on squad got shovels to dig in the dirt.

And they got to work.

They got the cribbing under the pod, then the airbags. Patterson started counting but stopped when he heard Chili. "Stop! Stop! Tell them to stop. You can't lift that off of him."

Patterson looked confused. "What?"

"He's going into crush syndrome. As soon as you release the limb, he's going into cardiac arrest."
