"IF I COULD have your attention." Mouch stood in front of everyone in the common room. "I would like to announce, next week, Antonio's boxing gym, Trudy and I are hosting an old fashioned Battle of the badges. Between the heroes of 51," Otis and Cruz cheered, "and those blockheads down at 21st police district," Otis and Cruz booed "for beer and bragging rights."
Melisa and Gabby were laughing at the two idiots. "I love it," Hermann declared. "That's the best news I heard all week."
"50 bucks a head for a good cause."
"What's the cause?" Melisa asked.
"Ah... it's to be determined at this time."
Hermann didn't seem to care about the cause; he cared more about the fight. "Let's not get bogged down with the whys and what fors, all right. All I care about is who's fighting for 51. Capp, are you in?"
Capp shook his head. "Can't. My mom says I have a deviated septum." Hermann didn't respond, just stared blankly at him. And Melisa was suppressing her laugh.
"Actually, I already volunteered," Jimmy told them. "Antonio sorted it out."
Gabby turned to Jimmy. "My brother set it up? Do you even know how to box?"
"Kind of. Danny and I used to go to this MMA gym down on Diversey."
Gabby started laughing. "Dude, MMA is not boxing."
"Enough with the nay-saying," Hermann told them. "All this kid needs is the right trainer, and he's going to be ready to bust that cop open like a donut-filled piñata. Fortunately, I'm the man for the job."
Melisa started laughing but stopped when she noticed Hermann looking at her. He went to grab steaks. "You okay?" Gabby asked Melisa.
"Yeah," Melisa nodded. "I'm fine." Gabby had asked because she noticed how quiet she had been. Just then, the alarm went off.
They were called to soldier field.
They arrived at the scene, and Melisa's eyes widened when she saw the purple smoke. She had never seen anything like it.
Once out of the truck, Melisa started guiding people away from the smoke.
The lieutenants and the chief made a plan quickly. Casey and Kelly were going in and could only take one person each.
Caset turned and knew which person was going in with him. "Bishop, with me. Bring the gas meter." He chose her because of the tank case they had. She had shown more of what she was capable of.
