MELISA WAS READING her book in the common room when Stella put a cup filled with ice on the table. She looked at it confused, as did Otis, who was sitting across from her.
"What is wrong with this picture?" Stella asked them.
Hermann sat next to Melisa, and he had already discussed this with Stella. "Don't take the bait," he warned them.
Melisa and Otis didn't see anything wrong with it. "Air bubbles," Stella said. "That's what's wrong. Because look, normal ice cubes get cloudy because they got air bubbles trapped inside them."
"You got air bubbles trapped in your head."
Stella ignored Hermann and sat down at the end of the table. "We should be serving giant, perfectly clear cocktail ice cubes at Molly's, don't you think?"
"She calls them artesian ice cubes."
"Nope. No, she doesn't," Mouch spoke from the couch, not looking up from his crossword puzzle.
"Artisanal," Stella corrected Hermann. She turned her attention to Melisa and Otis. "They make them in special freezers that cost thousands of dollars. But my friend Gary, who is some kind of engineering genius, modified a commercial ice maker to do the same exact thing, and we can have it for just 500 dollars."
Hermann was still very much against the idea. "You got to be kidding me. No way, that's not gonna happen." Otis had to leave to talk to Cruz, so only Melisa was left.
She wanted to agree with Stella because she didn't want to disappoint her, but she didn't like the idea. "I say we keep serving regular ice cubes."
Hermann threw his arms up in triumph. "Yes!"
"We've never gotten any complaints. People like our drinks."
"Exactly!"
Stella looked at Hermann. It wasn't over yet. "Otis and Gabby have a say, too, you know."
"And they're gonna agree with me."
"We'll see."
