They walked to the medical ward and found Eir working on a deer that had been hurt in the woods. The gentle Valkyrie had pale brown hair that fell to her shoulders. Her silver eyes made it appear that she was blind, but no, she had perfect vision. Like most Valkyrie, she had very light skin as she hardly went anywhere other than the Haven or Asgard. The woman was as tall as Beth and had an athletic but slim build. Her Valkyrie armor was hanging on the wall and she was wearing a white rolled up t-shirt and white sweatpants, not even any shoes, just a pair of socks. She was humming the same tune always tended to, which she had explained was the theme of the Valkyries.
"So... what was this all about?" Eir asked while taking a piece of bone out of the deer's leg.
"So, we still haven't found Beth, but we came up with an idea earlier," Mikayla explained "We were thinking that Nate may be able to find her using her thoughts."
"Hm... Heimdallr told me about a technique like what you're talking about," Eir replied in her usual soft tone "However, it's extremely taxing on him, and even when he was at his peak, it almost gave him a brain aneurysm when he tried it. That technique pushes your mind to work at double to triple its normal capacity."
"Wait, so do you know how to do it?" Nate asked.
"Can't you read my mind?"
"Eir, you're a Goddess. I can't read the minds of Gods, you're aware of this."
"Oh, that's right. I apologize, but to answer your question... I have an idea about it, however someone so young may not be able to handle its full force. It may end up killing you."
"Have I ever been afraid of that?" Nate asked "Beth's the better of the two of us anyway. The world's gonna be a better place with her in it."
"Do you truly wish to put your own body through Hel to save your friend?" Eir asked.
"Yeah... I'm sure, and she's not just my friend, she's my best friend. So yeah, I'm willing to risk myself getting even more fucked up." Nate confirmed.
"Oh! She's not just my friend, she's my best friend! Title of your sex tape!" Mikayla snickered.
"Bitch, don't tell me what to do!!! Plus, we all know that's the title of Beth's sex tape, but we're getting off topic." Nate turned back to the Goddess and sighed "You were saying?"
"You've always been a stubborn one, haven't you?" Eir sighed "Fine, I will teach you only what I know. Other than that, you're on your own."
"Yeah, I'm good with that, just tell me what to do."
Eir sighed and put her head in her hand, realizing that while these were Beth's best hope, they were still far from great. Against the Goddess's better judgment, she taught Nate everything she knew about the technique. At this point in his development, the Demigod could only feel everyone's minds, not their energy. His father could see literally everything at once, but it hadn't always been like this. The Aesir Watchman had once been just as inexperienced with his abilities as Nate, but then again, that was back before the first generation of Midgardians.
"So what you're saying is that I've got to tear my mind apart and send it out in all directions to find her energy?" Nate asked.
"That is... exactly what I told you, yes."
Nate sighed and replied "Alright... so how do I fuckin' do that!?"
"That... I don't fully know, but I will explain as much as I can." She sat down on the table next to the deer "As Freya, Odin, and Heimdallr have explained it to me, all your thoughts must be unknowable while also being implanted in every mind you can currently reach. Since I'm assuming you can hear her thoughts, so that means she's within range for this. I personally recommended Heimdallr never to do this, but none of you ever listen to me about harming yourselves."
"Look, I get that this could kill me, but I really appreciate everything you've done for us," Nate told her earnestly "But I don't care how much damage I do to myself, if I can make sure Beth gets back, I'm gonna do it."
"Fine, however if you're going to do this to yourself, then you may need a spell to keep yourself from absolutely going insane," Eir mentioned.
"Yeah, I've got that covered," Mikayla told her "I'm Circe's daughter, remember?"
"Yes, but your magic may not be powerful enough to keep his mind safe from permanent damage," Eir explained "You may want to go speak to Freya, as she is an even more powerful Goddess than me, and she is a master of the Vanir magic, that's said to be one of the strongest forms of magic there is. She may be able to teach you some spells that you will need."
"Oh, uh... where would she be?"
"Most likely in the lodge office with Orpheus," Eir replied "As the co-leader of the camp, I would assume that she would be around there."
"I guess that makes sense, but I've been working on Vanir magic, too. Maybe I can pull it off."
"Very true, but do you know what the spell would be called?" Eir asked.
"Uh... not, I can't really read the names of the spells yet."
"Exactly my point, you should at least go to her to find out what the name of the spell is, or whatever spell book it's in."
"Alright, we'll go to her. Thanks, Eir," Nate said, to which she nodded, and the group walked out.
"He's too reckless," Eir sighed as she went back to treating the deer's wounds.
The three walked to the lodge and passed right through the mess hall, which was where they passed Marc. They walked past him as he was pretty much useless in something like this. Much like Thor, all he really had interest in doing was getting drunk, partying, and fighting, not much help when searching for a missing person. Nate just threw him a cookie to keep him distracted and the three walked up the stairs to the office and knocked on the door. After a couple seconds, the door opened and showed Orpheus with his usual kind smile.
"Ah, hello, you four. What brings you around here?" He asked, happy to see them all together.
"Uh, Mikayla needed to talk to Freya. Is she here?" Eden asked.
"Oh, yes. In fact, you're all right on time. If you had come a minute later she would've been in her hidden garden out in the woods."
"Not that hidden," Nate mumbled under his breath as he had seen it and taken an apple or two from there once or twice.
"Oh, good. We need her help with a spell," Kenneth told Orpheus "Mikayla has some Vanir Magic work to do for her class and Eir said it would be good to ask Freya."
"Oh, well then come in, please." Eden nodded and the group walked into the room.
Orpheus left the room to do... whatever he was doing, and the four faced Freya. Even though she was the leader of the Valkyries and queen of Asgard... She wasn't dressed very formally. In fact, looking at her, you'd never expect her to be anyone powerful in any sense. She was over six and a half feet tall, much like Athena, but much less visually intimidating. Unlike Athena's constantly intense eyes, Freya's were much more warm and calming. Her thick hair was a healthy brown and her skin was very lightly tanned.
Like Eir, she was not wearing her armor, which made sense seeing as they weren't expecting Ragnarök for a long time. She had her hair done up in a bun and was wearing black sweatpants with a white t-shirt, which showed off her curvaceous chest and thick thighs. She was sharpening her sword and was clearly getting ready to leave, but when she noticed they were there, she turned around.
"Oh, hello, children. What brings you here?"
"We need your help with a spell that's gonna protect Nate's mind so he doesn't completely lose it during this technique he wants to use to find Beth."
"That thing that arrogant watchman used to use?" Freya sighed "I'll admit, you're using it for a much more noble purpose than what the scion of those disgusting Aesir." She walked up to Nate and asked "Are you sure you're ready to do this?"
"No, not entirely," Nate replied "But if it's giving me the chance to find Beth, then just teach her the spell, and we'll be out of your hair."
She sighed and replied with a simple "Okay, fine." She walked over to the bookshelf and skimmed through the spellbooks until she found the one she was looking for "Ah, here it is." She grabbed a book off the wall and threw it over her shoulder to Mikayla "This is a spell book from Vanaheim. On page one forty nine, there is a spell called Vernda Hugann, which you should use if you want to protect him from this accursed spell. You do know what your father had a tenancy to do with it, right?"
"No?"
"Good, now get out, and let me deal with the forest."
"Alright, man. We'll see you later," Mikayla said as they took the book and left with it "Alright, so do we use this on him then he does the technique, or do we do it while he does the technique? How does this work?"
"I do not know, but she did give us the spell we need. I suggest we use it on him before he does it, so that there will be less time for his mind to tear itself apart."
"Sounds like a good idea, let's do it." They all stood around Nate and he closed his eyes, then clenched his teeth, and a small ring of Bifrost flames formed around him.
When he fell to his knees and held his head in both hands, Eden yelled "Now, Mikayla, now! Do it now!"
She nodded, flipped through the book quickly to the designated page, then muttered "Vernda hugann..." She looked up at Nate, who was still groaning in pain, but it was clear he was now holding together "Vernda hugann." He slowly stood up "Vernda hugann!" Nate stood up straight and and kept his eyes closed, the ring very slowly increasing in size around him "You find her yet?"
"Hush," Eden whispered to her "He has a hard enough time focusing on normal things."
