Nate had begun his journey walking through familiar terrain, things he could recognize, remember. The spot where he and Kenneth had saved Beth was now back to being a lush green, looking almost better than it had before the fire. He didn't know much about the town he was journeying to, but he figured they probably didn't have a forest as beautiful as this one. He doubted there was a forest anywhere close to his home's beauty anywhere in the Mortal Plane. Still, this place was his home, it was time he learned more about it. He took out a phone he'd stolen from a store on the way back to the Haven and looked through house listings or roommate situations in the town. Surprisingly, the houses all looked really good, and the one he really liked had an opening for a roommate. Wasn't that convenient? This would also be his first chance to do something else, get a job. Likely something he was good at, or maybe he'd learn to do something new. Gulltoppr had to stop for snacks every few hours, so the ride was a bit slower than Nate had anticipated. Finally, during the sunset, they got to the quaint little seaside city of Pacifica. As they rode through the city, people were obviously, and rightly, afraid of the gigantic lion with long, sharp horns.
"Alright... let's find that house, buddy."
Dozens of miles away, Kenneth and Eden were still driving to UC Davis... well Kenneth was. He had to drop Eden off at her college before he got to his. The drive had been strange, new sights passing them that they'd never seen before. Eden hadn't seem much of it since she had fallen asleep quickly after they began driving. It seemed like she hadn't gotten much sleep the night before as she tended to be one of the few who would stay awake on their Gulltoppr rides, but then again, it made sense that she wouldn't be able to sleep. Almost none of the group could. Kenneth was only staying awake because every now and then Eden's head would bump the side of his. He stopped for gas a few miles away from Eden's apartment, which he had arranged for her on one of his stops, and went into the store. Eden woke up a few second before he got back in the car.
"Hey," She groaned as she rolled her neck and stretched her arms over her head "How far awat are we?"
"Well, I got you an apartment, and used Nate's strategy of getting money, plus I set up a bank account or each of us, and deposited just over a hundred thousand dollars into each. I am not proud, but it is all I could think to do. We should both be good for... about sixty six, sixty seven months?"
"Hm." About an hour and a half later they got to Eden's apartment, but before Kenneth could get back in the car, the older, but smaller of the two asked "Hey... could you stay one more night? I do not think I am ready to be all alone quite yet." Kenneth nodded, having felt them same way, and they went in to set her up in her new home.
While Mikayla could've transported herself to New York with a magical spell and Marc could've jumped there in the form of a lightning bolt, they had decided to travel like Mortals. The cab they'd taken was only supposed to take them to the next town over... however, Mikayla had been able to persuade him to take them exactly where they needed to be. Did she try to bargain or seduce him? No, absolutely not, she just put one of her daggers to his throat and told him to drive them to the nearest airport. When they got to the airport, she put a sweet facade back up and they both took their bags out of the back of the man's car. Understandably, he sped away as fast as possible, which inevitably led to a crash a few feet into the main road.
"Do you... do you think he's gonna be okay?" Marc asked.
"Eh, probably. Didn't hear an explosion."
"I... guess that makes sense."
Mikayla had to quickly put her weapons away before she and Marc walked into the airport proper. Walking around, they tried to find a way onto their plane without being noticed. Yes, they'd figured out tickets, no, they hadn't gotten their passports. They hadn't had the time, and neither had the forethought. They'd have asked Nate, but when it came to real world stuff, he was just about as clueless as the rest of them. Instead of just chancing it and letting Marc short circuit some equipment to cause a distraction, they decided to take an approach that was more akin to hidjing in plain sight. Mikayla watched a few security guards go into a staf only room and Marc turned into a lightning bolt to see what was in there. It took a couple tries, but they finally found the locker room. They put on janitor clothes and grabbed a wheely bin before putting their bags into the bin. Of course, as they made their way to the terminal, they had to keep up the act, so that meant people would put their trash all over their bags, with all their belongings inside. They had to walk around for a while to make sure they could go onto the plane without anyone noticing they had faked working there. Luckily, their window of opportunity arrived. About as fast as they had gotten into their disguises, they removed them, and walked onto the flight as scheduled.
"Whooh!" Mikayla sighed as they sat down in their seats "Nice work there."
"Yeah, maybe sneaking around should be our new go to."
"Uh... no. No, you're not even kind of subtle enough for that."
Beth was finally getting to Los Angeles, having had seemingly the least strange trip. She had to take a lot of tests to get into any college seeing as she didn't exactly have any official schooling. Kenneth had told her most of them were a formality, but the one called the exit test was the most important one. She had decided to google it on her new phone and print one out when she got to her new apartment. Unlike the others, she didn't have a way to get into a bank fast enough to steal a few thousand dollars to make rent... so she would be job hunting for a while. All in all, not the ideal start to her new life, but she hadn't expected it to be easy... and strangely this would likely be the most challenging thing she'd ever done, despite having gone to war with several gods over the past year.
Hours later, where the sun had sank, and the moon was high in the sky, Mikayla and Marc got off of their plane. For a few minutes, they just sat in the front lobby of Laguardia Airport. They didn't know what to do now. Marc had went to the bathroom and left his bag with Mikayla. The Daughter of Circe was looking down at her blades, wondering if she'd ever get the chance to see the people she'd grown so close with again. Those weapons were some of her only remaining momentos she had other than memories. Marc came back and looked out at the stange scene in front of them. People were rushing in and out, on phones and scrambling to drag their kids to their planes. It was strange seeing all of this for the first time. Back home, everything was so simple, people wouldn't rush or push and shove to get somewhere. All they had to do was get through the day the best way they could figure out how. Now, they were in the real world, but it didn't both him all that much. He walked back to Mikayla and tapped her on the shoulder. She looked up at him and nodded before putting her blades away.
The two walked out of the airport and own the sidewalk, both just looking up at the full moon. Kenneth and Eden were watching youtube on the son of Hermes' son's computer with the moon's glow shining in through the window. Beth had found a job in a resturant and had been given a place to stay in the apartment above it. She walked up the stairs to the roof and stood looking up at the moon with her spear in her hand. Nate had gotten a job in a cafe at the ground end of the Pacifica pier. He'd grilled himself a sausage and at it while walking along the beach with the moon's glow illuminating the water. No matter where any of them went, or however far they were away, they would always be connected. The moon and the world they shared would always link them all to each other... well at least for a while, but they'd deal with that when the time came.
"I'm proud of you all," Orpheus told Hayden a few minutes later as they were still standing at the gate after night had fallen, neither of the two having left the spot since their friends, and the King of Hades' family, had departed "You stuck together through everything and in doing so, you've started something new. You've begun a new age of Divinity."
