Kamchatka Wilderness
Soviet Union
1960
They faced the strange dawn... four figures against the dark blue sky pulsating teals, greens, purples, amid twinkling diamond stars. During the night they had hiked, putting miles between them at the volcano. The ash cloud had thinned out and the land was beginning to look alive with tundra grass and colorful flowers, amid small soot and ash free flowing streams.
Indy searched the sky as the rising sun made it fade. "There's the North Star." He looked at the three kids behind him. "Everyone doing ok?"
Emily was strangely quiet, her arm wrapped around her side.
"Em..." Indy murmured, recognizing her pain-bent posture. "We can slow down."
"Not if we want to survive the volcano," Emily clenched her teeth. "I think the wounds are making more sensitive to the earthquakes. They've been increasing all night... even though we're further away."
Indy moved close to Emily and let her lean on his chest. She half fell against him. He lost his balance for a moment in surprise at the impact, then adjusted his stance and looped his arm gently around her shoulders, giving her a kiss on her facial scars.
"My sense is that the apkallu are holding it back. Or... at least they believe that they are holding it back," Lizavet offered. "They want us to get the swords which will liberate them from hell."
Indy looked at Shorty. "What's your pilot's navigation sense tell you? How far are we from the ruin where you crashed?"
Shorty swallowed. "We flew in a direct line from Attu Island once the storm hit us. There were two mountains and a lake shaped like a triangle. The ruin was on the edge of the lake. That's all I've got, Dad. Sorry."
"Lizavet? Have you got any more clues to our location?" Indy asked.
She stared at the sky, the colors reflecting off her jet black hair. "I think we should follow the way presented to us by the Treasure Guardian, Papa."
"My professor isn't satisfied with trusting the sky," Indy frowned.
"Then trust the adventurer," Lizavet answered.
Indy flinched. "That's chaos."
"Turned out ok for me," Emily answered, forcing a grin up at her father.
"And me," Shorty added.
Emily blinked and touched the back of her neck. "Lizavet, is it the shaman drugs, or are the stars moving?"
"Wandering stars," Lizavet whispered, her eyes wide with amazement and adoration. "I have never seen them before! They are the messengers and timekeepers of the Treasure Guardian. The legend claims they fight beside those who hold the swords against the evil apkallu."
Shorty looked at the two swords on his belt. "Which would be... us?"
"That's right," Indy admitted. "Like it or not. We've got six of the seven swords."
"The seventh one is in the Unseen Realm," Lizavet swallowed. "The apkallu will try to kill us, or force us to get it."
"But doesn't the Unseen Realm belong to them?" Emily asked.
"Not entirely," Lizavet answered. "It is the realm of the supernatural... just as this is the realm of the people and the natural has both good and bad people. The unseen has an above, which is where the good Creator lives... and the below realm, under the earth, is where the apkallu are imprisoned along with evil."
"Oh." Emily blinked. Suddenly her knees buckled and she collapsed.
