Emily dove into the deep waters as the earth trembled again. Silt rose from the bottom blinding and burning at her wounds and eyes. She shut her eyes letting the waves wash over her.

Something touched her legs, wrapping itself around her and dragging her under.

Emily gripped the sword, slashing at the strange unseen evil.

It dragged her under the water, winning.

Emily opened her eyes and glared into the face of the chained creatures she and her father had sent into gloomy darkness. The apkallu couldn't reach her... but it pointed and laughed at the giant devourer worm blocking the entrance to the cave.

The child screamed again... "EMAMA! EMAMA!!!" her tiny voice suddenly swallowed by the water. But she rose above it for a third cry. "EMAMA!"

Under the dark gloomy surface of the waters - Emily grinned at the devourer worm - knowing the apkallu could understand. "Apkallu - Wrong Jones - I'm not afraid of snakes." Then she stabbed the devourer worm. It let go of her.

Emily swam for the surface, gasping for air. "Where are you?" She yelled into the emptiness of the cave.

"EMAMA!" The child screeched.

"I'm coming!" Emily identified the noise and swam toward it - the swords lighting her way.

The water sloshed at the entryway of a small cave-like passage.

Emily fought through her memories. "It wasn't fun but you won."

She held one sword in front of her, the other on her belt and started to crawl.

The cave walls trembled and started to squeeze her.

"It wasn't fun, but you won," Emily repeated to herself as the water rose above her mouth and nose, filling with silt. She spat. "I'm not a kid anymore. And I won't be mad at little me, for being afraid... but I'm..."

"EMAMA!"

Emily froze. "That's... not my name... That's... Amharic... Ethiopian for..."

"MAMA!" The child screamed.

The waters rose above Emily's head, filling her nose and mouth with sand and silt. The walls squeezed around her as the earth trembled above and below.

Emily realized there was a stone wall between her and the child. The child that might be hers.

Emily's final thought was, "I'm pissed. Nobody gets between me and my family!"

Then she rammed the rock wall... tumbling forward, rolling head over heels.
