The fires towered above them, contaminating what little oxygen was left in the ancient cave. Emily crawled forward over the rough pumice stones, Indy beside her.
The air was nearly liquid with unbearable heat. Emily could feel the rough stones scraping against her body as she tried to crawl forward, ignoring the crushing pressure of her memories. She pulled herself forward, gripping a stone in front of her. The stone pulled out from its place and clattered back toward her. Indy dodged it, rolling slightly. They stared at each other for a long moment.
Finally Emily swallowed and looked at the hole in the floor where the stone had been. "Dad... we're over top a lava chamber."
Indy crawled forward. Together they stared at the pulsating lava coursing beneath them like an unwelcome river straight to hell. He looked at her. "Only one thing to do, Em... keep going."
Emily shuddered. "Right, Dad." She crawled forward.
"Freeze!" Indy ordered.
They both listened for a moment. Rocks were falling from somewhere... chipping at something. Something that sounded a lot like glass.
Another rock slipped.
Emily watched this one slide into place. "The stones are shifting, Dad. It's like they're sliding tiles."
Indy watched for a moment. "The rough pumice is scraping the obsidian glass. It's going to weaken the glass."
"Guess that means we'll have to make a run for it," Emily muttered. "Which means, standing up..."
"In this heat - it'll burn your lungs if you breathe it," Indy warned. He gripped her hand. "Ready?"
"Dad -" Emily paused. "What if there's a mirror of hell? Like the mirror of heaven you found?"
"So... what if there's a mirror of hell, Em?"
"Seven years bad luck won't matter too much, will it?" She asked softly.
Indy paused, studying the ancient ruin, considering Emily's question. "Smoke and mirrors. There's gotta be a connection..."
"As above... so below?" Emily remembered. "In the Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh there's a mirror that the goddess Inanna uses to see into the supernatural." She pulled her compact mirror from her artifact bag. "Dad... since you can see into the supernatural now... would you take a look?"
