A great screech rose from the apkallu, shuddering, getting pulled from their stolen human bodies by angry avenging angels.
"SHUT YOUR EYES, KIDS!" Indy yelled, tackling Emily, pressing her close.
Shorty grabbed for Lizavet as they swarmed around the family. The apkallu howled in fury, as they were struck down, bound and gagged. Chains were thrown around the apkallu and ancient commands and curses filled the air like incense. The earth shook.
Emily whimpered.
"Keep your eyes shut, hon," Indy whispered above the screams. "I know its terrifying... but..." He had his eyes shut and he could still see what was going on. That hadn't happened before when he and Marion had seen the Ark of the Covenant opened. "I've been through this before..."
The Treasure Guardian leapt into the fight amid the avenging spirits. All had swords and were taller and mightier than the apkallu. Terror struck the apkallu as more and more of the armies of the eternal unseen realm filled the room.
The apkallu were pushed back and bound in dark chains.
The Treasure Guardian stood over them - his sword bloody. "I told you not to come back. You were warned not to attempt to enslave my people."
The apkallu that had inhabited Edo looked up, daring to defy the Treasure Guardian. "They weren't your people when this started."
The Treasure Guardian pointed to Emily and Lizavet. "Both of them were."
"But you didn't come for her! You let us torture her dreams!"
The Treasure Guardian grinned. "She won. She always won in her dreams." He nodded to the other spirits who were loyal to him. "Take them away. They know that they are bound in chains of gloomy darkness until the day of judgement. Mene Mene Tekel Upharisen apkallu - you have been weighed in the balance and found lacking. Your days are numbered before you are devoured by my pet behemoth, Ammit."
The ground trembled. The Treasure Guardian's army threw the the apkallu weighted down with impossible to break chains into the fiery chasm. The ground collapsed over top of them, as lava sealed it shut.
Lizavet scrambled out of Shorty's grip, taking his sword as well as her own two. "I knew you'd come," she faced the Treasure Guardian, kneeling. "I mistook Papa for you. I am sorry."
"Don't be sorry, Lizavet," The Treasure Guardian smiled. "It's an honor to look like a good father."
Lizavet knelt offering her swords, along with those stolen by the apkallu.
Indy paused. "Stay here, Em. Keep your eyes shut. Give me the other sword that you have too."
Emily swallowed, trembling. Her hand was locked on the sword covered in blood. "I'm not sure I can let go, Dad."
He eased his hand over hers, while his other arm pressed against her wounded side. "I'm here, Em. Its okay. It wasn't fun - but we won."
Emily let out a shuddering breath, dropping the sword.
Indy picked the swords up and faced the Treasure Guardian. "Sir - you probably shouldn't be trusting humanity with these again. And -" Indy swallowed, staring at the fatal scar on his chest. "I suppose I'm - I'm reporting for duty in the unseen realm?"
The Treasure Guardian laughed. "You'll do more good this side of eternity, Indiana Jones. You've got kids and grandkids to raise."
"And the swords, sir?" Indy asked.
"Keep them," The Treasure Guardian answered. "There are more monsters to fight, treasures to find and guard, and people to save."
"Yes, sir!" Indy grinned.
