"(Y/n)........."

"Hmmmmm........?"

"Why have Dwalin, Balin and Thorin been looking at you all day........?"

"Perhaps because I am prettier than Glóin and Óin.........."

"(Y/n).........!"

"I don't know, Bilbo. Why don't you go and ask them. I can not see into the minds of dwarves, and nor would I want to. I hate to think what I might find." (Y/n) replied, as she looked over at her brother. Shaking her head at his concerned look.

"Maybe Thorin has been talking to them about sending me back to the Shire. He still hasn't spoken to me since he saw my weapons, and I know he doesn't like having me around. But you know Gandalf won't let him do anything. And even if he tried to send me away, I wouldn't leave you." She continued, giving Bilbo a reassuring smile.

She hadn't told her brother about her interaction with Balin down by the river, nor about her little training session with Dwalin. (Y/n) sure that he would only worry if she mentioned that she had been fighting against the big dwarf and his axe. The dwarrowdam presuming that it was because of those things, that the two sons of Fundin, were looking at her. But Thorin...........she had no idea. Maybe he was imagining her being pulled apart by wargs, so then he could tell Gandalf that he 'told him so'. That a female was only useless extra weight that they had to carry; but she didn't care. Admittedly she did feel a new respect for the prince after hearing what Balin had said about the Battle of Moria. About how Thorin had rallied his men after his grandfather's death and the battle had been won. But there was a difference between respecting someone and liking them, and she still didn't like the son of Thráin.

"Whatever the reason, I don't think you should worry." (Y/n) added, before reaching over and taking her brother's hand. Squeezing it, before turning her attention back to the road in front of them.

                                                      >>---------------------------------<<

Thorin found himself looking back at the dwarrowdam that rode next to her hobbit brother. When he had made his way to relieve Dwalin the night before; the prince had found himself pulling his sword from its sheath as he had heard the sounds of a fight, rather than finding his friend on watch. Quickly following the noises of clashing metal, only stopping when he came to another small clearing and saw Dwalin fighting with (Y/n). Thorin about to step forward and stop everything, to reprimand Dwalin for fighting the younger and much more inexperience dwarrowdam; but then he had seen how she moved. Seen how she so effectively used her sword against the heavier axe of her stronger opponent. Seen that despite the fact that she had never known battle, it appeared that she had, in truth, known her fair share of warfare. Her movement as natural as breathing; it as if she had been trained by the greatest warriors, for her all life.

He had had questions about the dwarrowdam, long before this. There something........well, a little odd about her; other than the fact that it was obvious that she was not a hobbit, yet she still insisted that she was. And having stood there and watched as she and Dwalin sparred, more questions had come to his mind; none more so than who her parents could have been. The prince having the strangest feeling that there was something familiar about her; a notion that had been niggling at his brain, from the moment that she had entered the house in the Shire. Though what that familiarity was, he annoyingly couldn't work out. Feeling that the answer to his question was right on the tip of his tongue yet would still not reveal itself.

Admittedly, he still wasn't happy about having a dwarrowdam with them. He was raised, as were the rest of the Company, that dwarrowdams should be protected, as with many other aspects of dwarven life, from the rest of the world and other races. That, and dwarf women were a rare commodity, and exceptionally picky when it came to their men; so, if a family had a daughter, she was guarded by her father and any brothers that she may have. And if a dwarf was lucky enough to wed, a husband would protect his wife with his life. But he had to admit, only to himself of course, that given he had seen her not only fight against Dwalin, but also defeat him, he had come to think that perhaps she had been right when they had first met in the Shire, that she could fight and beat all of them with one arm tied behind her back if she had to.

"We camp here for the night." Thorin called out, as a tumbled down building came into view.

"Fili, Kili, look after the ponies. Make sure you stay with them......... Glóin, Óin, get a fire going............."

"I think it would be wiser to move on. We could make for the Hidden Valley........" Gandalf remarked, as he looked at the ruins of the home that had once been filled with life.

"I have told you already, I will not go near that place..........." (Y/n) drowning out the rest of the conversation between Thorin and the wizard, as she and Balin moved to help her brother. The dwarrowdam not really interested in what the moody prince had to say, until Bilbo began to speak.

"Everything alright?.......Gandalf where are you going?" The hobbit asked, as the wizard stormed passed them. (Y/n) shaking her head, as she heard the old man grumble.

"Seek the company of the only one around here who's got any sense....." Gandalf retorted. (Y/n) having to say that she found his remark a little rude, but she could understand his frustrations.

"And who's that..........?"

"Myself, Mister Baggins............I have had enough of dwarves for one day........." Gandalf explained. The dwarrowdam rolling her eyes, as she looked over to Thorin.

"Come on Bombur, we're hungry........"

"Is he coming back?" Bilbo asked, as he looked between his sister and Balin.

"Well, if he's gone, I am not staying around here so Thorin can turn his ire on me, next." (Y/n) said, before Balin could reply. Pulling her sword and bow from the side of the saddle.

"I'm off to hunt. Might find a deer or something around here. Make a nice change from rabbit and hare........"

"But lass..........."

"I'm sorry, Balin. I know you are going to protest; but I can look after myself. And its this, or the Company might be missing one member by the morning. Anyway, I'll be back before you know it." (Y/n) interrupted, giving her brother a kiss on the cheek then quickly making her way back down the hill. Not bothering to listen as Thorin demanded to know where she was going.
