Once more, (Y/n) found herself sat in front of her mother, her hair being curled into some elaborate design by Dis, while other dwarrowdams rushed around the home looking over all manner of jewellery and ribbons that might go with the ridiculously elaborate dress that had been prepared for that evening; the younger princess not sure how she was supposed to dance in it, (Y/n) having a feeling that she would look like some great cake when she was forced into it. But at least this time, she did not have to suffer the indignity of having her older brothers laugh at her while she was primped and preened for the dance that she had not been looking forward to; Fili and Kili told to go and join their uncle and dress with him; so at least she had a little longer, before feeling the need to fight her siblings for some comment that would be less than complimentary. The young princess wondering if all the guests would think less of her, if she were to knock her brother's heads together in front of them.

"What.........?" (Y/n) suddenly asked, having realised that her thoughts of disposing of Fili and Kili had drowned out her mother's voice.

"Handsome............."

"What........who is handsome..........?" Dis rolling her eyes as her daughter looked at her through the mirror.

"Have you been listening to nothing I have said......? I was talking about the young Master Dormir that cousin Dáin sent all the way here with that beautiful necklace; he is handsome, don't you think.........?"

"Oh, I........I suppose, I didn't really notice..........."

"You didn't notice? How could you not, child? He is tall for a dwarf, strong looking and such a fine beard for one so young. He can hardly be much older than Fili yet Dáin trusts him enough to send him all the way from the Iron hills with your gift. I would say that he is quite an impressive dwarf. A dwarrowdam could do worse than get to know him better........." Dis continued. (Y/n) doing her best give her a small smile and not to sigh, as her mother went back to pinning up her hair.

(Y/n) knew that her mother only wanted what was best for her, for all three of her children; but trying to push her towards a dwarf that she really hadn't taken much notice of, was not going to make her happy; nor did the idea of leaving Ered Luin, to make her way to some other dwarven realm. (Y/n) knew that her mother wanted her to have a better life, one that was not so hard; a life where she would be treated as the princess that she was. But (Y/n) cared nothing for that, she would do what she had to do and live how all the others lived, for she was a Durin, and she belonged wherever the people of her uncle, of Thráin and Thrór were; she belonged in Thorin's hall, with her brothers, and she would never give her heart to a dwarf that would take her away from any of them, no matter how handsome her mother thought the dwarf to be.

"Perhaps you should wear the gift............"

"No........"

"And why not..........?" Dis giving her youngest child a quizzical look.

"Well, it may make it seem to others that I am interested in Master Dormir, and we would not want others believing that he has my favour; especially when I conversed with him for only a few moments. That, and I have not had a chance to meet our other guests, nor to receive their gifts. You have told me that there should be many a handsome dwarf at the dance this evening, so, I should not make it appear that Master Dormir already has some place in my esteem. We do not want to alienate ourselves from the other kingdoms, just because Dáin is our cousin." (Y/n) countered, smiling broadly at her mother. Hoping that all her hours of sitting and learning diplomacy at the knee of Balin might just pay off. A relieved sigh leaving her lips, as her mother smiled and kissed the top of her head.

"You are of course right, my dear. It would not pay to be seen favouring someone before you have had the chance to dance with as many of our guests as possible. Mahal knows that there could be an even more handsome dwarf just waiting for you. A dwarf that would take care of you and protect you........" (Y/n) simply nodding at her mother's words; already looking forward to this evening being over, as her dress was finally brought to her.

                                                          >>----------------------------------<<

"And what are you two laughing about........?" Thorin asked, as he looked at his nephews. He had already told them to be on their best behaviour, to not do or say anything that might ruin the evening that their mother had been organising for some time; but Fili and Kili would always be Fili and Kili, and would probably need to be warned a few more times before they even got to the hall where the dance was to be held.

"Nothing, uncle........" Fili replied, as he and his brother did their best to calm their amusement. The continued antics of a certain large dwarf not helping them behave any. The two sons' of Dis sure that they had never seen Dwalin look, act, or smell like he did at the moment. His current attire much different to what they were used to. His normal heavy duty, dull clothing replaced by something far finer, his hair combed neatly, and the ends of his moustache decorated with fancy beads; yet it was not all that, that the brothers found most amusing, it was the way that Dwalin smelt, the whole house filled with the scent of some kind of unguent that in their opinion was more suitable for a dwarrowdam. Thorin shaking his head as he looked between his nephews and his friend; the older prince knowing what all of Dwalin's grooming was for, that he wished to stand out when (Y/n) was surrounded by all the other males that would be there; but it was not for him to explain that to Fili and Kili. Thorin just hoping that neither of them spoiled things, if Dwalin finally summoned up the courage to ask not only for his and her brother's permission to court her; but most importantly (Y/n)'s too. Thorin offering a small prayer to Mahal, before he ushered the boys out of the small home, with a glaring Dwalin and amused Balin, following close behind.
