"There has to be a cave somewhere close by. After eating the dwarves, they would have needed somewhere to go and hide from the sun." (Y/n) continued, as she placed her hand on the now stone trolls.
"It might be worth finding, Gandalf. You know how those creatures like to hoard things. We might find something interesting." The Ranger added, as she turned to the wizard. (Y/n) ignoring the huff from the dwarf to her side that she now knew was the leader of this strange Company.
"Do you think that you can find it......?" Gandalf enquired. He too choosing to ignore Thorin.
"Well, if it smells as bad as these three did, then even someone who has no nose, would be able to find it. But as it is, you will have to settle for someone with no eyes." (Y/n) smiled, before turning. The white eyed Ranger expertly dodging rock and branches as she went. Gandalf looking down at Thorin who was still by his side; the wizard simply giving him a shrug, before he followed after the Númenórean.
>>---------------------------------<<
"Excuse me........." A nervous voice suddenly came, as (Y/n) continued to follow her nose towards where the trolls had possibly been hiding while they were so far from their normal home.
"Yes.......?" (Y/n) replied, waiting for the speaker's name; though sure that it was the voice of the one that Gandalf had called Bilbo. The one that had been the one who had been stalling for time; and the only one that had known who she was.
"Oh, yes, I am Bilbo, Bilbo Baggins........It is very nice to meet you.....my, er, White Eyes......." The hobbit replied, holding out his hand for her to shake, but quickly pulling it back when he realised that she couldn't see it.
"(Y/n) will do, Master Baggins. And it is a pleasure to meet the obvious brains of this Company. Though perhaps we should save the handshake for until we get through all these trees." The Ranger replied, chuckling to herself, as she pushed a branch out of the way. Bilbo stopping and looking between her and his hand, before quickly moving back to her side.
"How......how did you..............?"
"How did I know you held out your hand for me to shake.....? Simple master Baggins. You are a hobbit, not a dwarf, and although I have not had as many dealings with the people of the Shire as some other Rangers have, I still know that the vast majority of you are very polite; therefore, when you introduce yourself it was only natural for me to think that you would offer your hand......."
"Oh.....yes......of course........." Bilbo agreed, again looking down at his hand. The hobbit having to run to catch up with the Númenórean when he realised that he had once more fallen behind.
"I have read about you in my books, about all your adventures. I always found it amazing that you could do all the things you could without being able to........." The hobbit cutting himself off, before he said something that might offend the female Ranger.
"To see.......I don't mind you saying it, Master Baggins. I have not been able to see since the day I was born. For me all it means is that you view the world one way, with your eyes, and I view it with things like my hearing and smell. You would not believe what you can sense, what you can feel of the world when you are born as I was, and I feel no shame in my white eyes. Thought I do hate to imagine what your stories told you about me. I am sure they were all exaggerated.........."
"I don't think so........I think I believe every word........" Bilbo quickly said, smiling up at the Ranger.
"Well, someone close to me has always said that my reputation proceeds me, though until this moment I never believed him. I will have to remember to apologise to him next time or paths cross. But for now, what say we find this troll cave? Given that trolls have a habit of collecting other people's possessions, we might find something interesting in the hoard. Perhaps even something for you, Master Baggins." (Y/n) told him, finding herself smiling at her new acquaintance.
>>---------------------------------<<
"This way......!" (Y/n) called out. The stench, as she stood at the mouth of the cave now so overwhelming, that she had to cover her nose in hopes that her last meal didn't make a reappearance.
"What's that stench........?" One of the dwarves enquired, as Gandalf and the rest of the Company finally caught up with her. She and the wizard leading the way. The sound of buzzing flies filling the air as they all walked further into the darkness.
"It's a troll hoard.......be careful what you touch." Gandalf replied. The dwarves all coughing and retching as they began to taste the foul odour that hung heavily around them. The Ranger just shaking her head as she heard some of them begin to speak about the gold that littered the floor; that it seemed a shame to just leave it lying around. (Y/n) sure that the dragon and dwarves had more in common than the dwarves would ever admit.
"(Y/n). Over here." Gandalf suddenly called out. The Ranger following the sound of his voice.
"These swords were not made by any troll." Thorin said, as she came to stand by the wizard's side.
"Nor were they made by any smith among men." Gandalf spoke, before she heard the sound of steel being drawn slightly from scabbards.
"What do you think.......?" The wizard enquired, as he placed the sword in (Y/n)'s waiting outstretched palms. Gandalf holding up his hand to quiet the prince as the Ranger carefully touched the metal scabbard.
"By the feel and the weight, I would say that it was forged in Gondolin. And given that, I believe that the other one may be too. Forged by the high elves of the First Age, if I am not mistaken. One could not wish for a finer blade than this." She explained, before handing the sword back to the wizard. Gandalf smiling as Thorin half reluctantly kept the sword firmly in his grasp. (Y/n) once more shaking her head, as she heard a voice comment that they were making a long-term deposit; the Ranger only able to presume that that meant that some of the gold that had been spoken about previously, had been buried.
"Lets get out of this foul place........." Thorin called out. (Y/n) placing her hand on Gandalf's arm, as he went to move.
"(Y/n), what..........?"
"You aren't the only one that has found a sword. I believe that this one might just come in handy for a certain hobbit. I think that you should give it to him........" (Y/n) told him, as she handed him the small sword.
"In truth, I think our dear Bilbo would much rather you gave it to him, my dear........" Gandalf replied, as he placed it back in her hands.
"I think you might just be a hero of his. Nothing quite like receiving a gift from a hero.........." The wizard explained. Chuckling as (Y/n) shook her head at the idea of being a hero; but nodding at the suggestion for her to give the sword to the hobbit herself, before the two made their way back out into the light.
"Master Baggins......."
"Hmmmm?" The hobbit turning to see the Ranger.
"Here.....this is about your size." She told him, as he handed him the blade. Bilbo looking between her and it.
"I can't take this.........."
"The blade is of elvish make, which means it will glow blue when orcs or goblins are nearby. A handy thing to have if you ask me..........."
"I have never used a sword in my life.........."
"And I hope you never have to. But given your journey and your companions, I believe that it would be wise to learn; and as it seems as though I am to be with you for some while, perhaps I could be the one to teach you how to use it. But always remember that true courage is not about knowing when to take a life; but when to spare one." The Ranger told him, as she placed a hand on his shoulder. Bilbo along with everyone else suddenly drawing their weapons as something came crashing through the trees behind them.
"THIEVES. FIRE. MURDER!" Being shouted out, before a sledge pulled by rabbits, and steered by a very odd looking man, came upon them.
