Rae had been caught in heavy traffic, making her arrival time at UN Village closer to 6:30 P.M. Feeling flustered and rushed, she urgently made her way to the top floor, her hair clip nearly sliding loose from the weight of her hair as she ran to the elevator.
When stepping off the elevator, she froze, noticing the door to Yoongi's apartment had been cracked open, the unusual scene leaving her uneasy.
Rae stalled for a moment before lightly knocking on the door. No answer came. Rae cautiously pushed the door open, her eyes hyper-aware of her surroundings as she took in the scene of an empty foyer and living room. Yoongi wasn't in sight, but there was a black laptop open on the coffee table, next to a half-filled bottle of whiskey, and the sight caused a sinking feeling in Rae's chest.
Rae slipped off her shoes and closed the door behind her. The apartment was eerily silent with Holly not approaching her with a greeting, but Rae forced herself to walk into the living room anyway.
Passing by the coffee table, Rae paused to take notice of the content on the lit computer screen, translating the words in her mind into English as she read.
It's stopped, but don't hide in the darkness,
Because the light will rise again.
There is no end in sight, is there a way out?Rae re-read the words a few times, her mind going to the worst possibilities. The dejected words, the bottle of strong whiskey, Yoongi's history of depression... Rae's breath caught in her throat realizing Yoongi might not be OK. What if his insistence to see her was a call for help?
Rae frantically approached Yoongi's bedroom, opening the door this time without knocking. The bed sheets were disheveled, Yoongi nowhere to be seen. Rae peeked into the master bathroom that had the door wide open, but there wasn't anyone in sight.
Rae made her way back to the hall, taking quick notice of the other two closed doors in the hallway. Rae opened the one closest to her and found what she had been looking for.
Yoongi was sitting in the dimly lit room that appeared to be a recording studio, staring at an array of computer screens at a large desk in front of him. He was wearing all black, blending in with his swivel chair. His head was bobbing to an unheard beat, his free hand pressing against his headphone set.
Rae noticed Holly sleeping on a small leather sofa in the corner of the room that was set up underneath a display of guitars that hung on the walls. The room had a moody dim lighting to it, and a handful of KAWS sculptures were on display on the wall next to Rae.
Rae's presence had remained unnoticed by Yoongi. She could feel anger bubbling inside her as she watched him casually move lines on the computer in front of him to create a music track. She was resentful that while she had been stressed and worried about his well-being for the last hour and a half, he had been perfectly fine.
He probably didn't even need her tonight, but he forced her here anyway, and Rae couldn't conceal how upset she was by it.Rae boldly approached Yoongi from behind, lifting his headset from his ears. He jumped in surprise, swiveling in his chair to see who had entered the room, his free hand grasping at his chest.
"Yeogiyo!" he let out a panted breath. He looked Rae up and down, and let out a sigh of relief.
"Don't scare me like that. I'm easily spooked," he said.
Rae's mouth fell open, her anger melting away and being replaced with a new emotion - fury.
"What did you say?" she asked through gritted teeth.
Yoongi gave a gummy grin, his mood clearly light and not in the state of gloom she assumed him to be in. "I said don't scare me like that."
Rae felt her hands clench against the headphones that were still in her grasp.
"Do you speak English?" she couldn't believe the question had even left her lips. Nim said Yoongi didn't speak English well, yet she could have sworn she just heard him say three sentences in perfect English. Was she dreaming?
Yoongi smirked. He was obviously amused, not even a little bit fazed by the glare Rae was sending his way. "Only when I want to."
Rae couldn't hide her shock or her vexation. "So the last two days, you pretended you couldn't understand me?"
Yoongi laughed. "You mean like what you've been doing?" Yoongi stood up from his chair, his dark eyes staring into Rae's. "You're a bad liar. I know you speak Korean."
Rae swallowed. "I never said I did."
Yoongi rolled his eyes. "Your face reacted every time I said something yesterday, sunshine," he tacked on at the end with a mocking tone. Rae flushed with panic. She had been caught, and she didn't think denying it would help the situation. Her eyes narrowed as she glared at him.
"If you knew, why didn't you say something sooner?"
Yoongi casually shrugged. "I like making you nervous, remember?" Yoongi winked, and Rae's stomach flipped at his lighthearted banter. "It was fun watching you act like you had no idea what was going on. I wondered how long you would be able to keep it a secret before slipping up, but then another part of me was already tired of it. I don't like talking much, and coming clean about speaking English seemed less annoying in the end, so here we are," Yoongi said, offering a fast smile.
Rae's head was spinning trying to process the information overload. Her thoughts were a mess. Addressing that he spoke English, that she spoke Korean, that he baited her and teased her, addressing the sunshine nickname, his stubborn call for her to show up tonight, addressing his threats of drinking and the depressed words on the computer screen in the other room, addressing his medication for the night, and checking his stitches - not to mention, she was starving because he had made her skip dinner. Rae truly had a million things on her mind, and her ability to sort through them rationally was failing.
"Yoongi..."
His eyes lit up in surprise. "You realize that's the first time you ever said my name?"
"And you have yet to say mine," Rae threw back at him. "Where is sunshine from anyway?"
Yoongi's expression turned from amused to sincere. "It is your name. Rae, like a ray of sunshine. I thought it went well with your bright face and blonde hair. You're like sunshine."
She had to admit his reasoning was pretty adorable but she didn't want him to know that, after all, she was still upset at him. "Right...well Yoongi-"
"Call me Min,"
"Min?"
"Mm-hmm," he nodded.
Rae's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "I didn't realize that's another name you go by."
"It's not," Yoongi said, taking a step forward, his body towering over Rae as he thoughtfully looked into her eyes. "I want you to call me Min," he said in his deep voice, and the sentence sent chills down Rae's neck.
Min. Rae wondered if this was another new persona she would be getting to know. Rae couldn't deny that she had a curiosity with Agust D, an admiration for Suga, and a liking to Yoongi, but Min - that was a dangerous fascination, an attraction. It was uncharted waters that she wasn't sure she would be safe exploring.
Using his good hand, Min shook out his fluffy hair while walking past her, the scent of him making Rae's head spin. He smelled like a mixture of something sweet, but also something with spice; lavender, grapefruit, and sandalwood were the smells she could distinguish. Rae didn't want to move, taking in every bit of it."Have you had dinner yet?" Min asked, calmly looking back at her as he got to the door.
Rae hesitated. "I have something waiting for me at home," Rae said honestly. She didn't have dinner planned, but she was relying on Ji-Sun's promise of chocolate for a bedtime snack.
Motioning with his free hand he waved for Rae to follow him. "I'm sure I have something better. Let's eat together."
