Min insisted that Rae sit down at the bar, letting him do all the work, not even worried about completing the tasks one handed.
"Are you sure you don't want my help?" Rae asked doubtfully, fiddling her thumbs.
Min nodded assuredly. "Mm hmm," he hummed. "But you can take this opportunity to ask all your questions."
"I thought you said you don't like talking," Rae pointed out.
Min raised his eyebrows in surprise by her comment. "I am a man of few words, but let's just say you happened to catch me in a good mood."
Min shuffled some items around in the fridge, pulling out a Tupperware of raw steak. "Go on, out with it. I can tell you're nearly bursting at the seams to say what you want to say," he smiled at her coyly.
Rae scoffed, folding her arms across her chest, pouting underneath her mask. "You act like you have me all figured out."
"No, but I would like to," Min smiled as he patted some salt into the steak. "Maybe that's why I am feeling a bit more talkative than usual."
"You want to learn more about me?" Rae asked, confused.
Min was quiet for a moment, taking her question seriously. "I think it's deeper than that. I'm intrigued by you." He said the words so nonchalantly that Rae almost didn't consider the weight of his statement. How could he be so casual and collected saying things like that?
"Aren't you a bit intrigued by me too?" He boldly asked as he turned to the stove to start the burner.
Rae felt her heart race at the question. Min had been so transparent in his thoughts, whatever they were, making it seem easy to share them honestly. It was like he didn't care what the repercussions were or the direction the conversation would go. He preferred to be blunt, and at first, Rae thought it made him come off as rude and overly self-confident, but the more she was with him she realized it was the opposite. His boldness was brave. He didn't hold himself back. He was keen to be in the moment and it was a quality that both scared and excited Rae.
The thought of Rae being upfront with her feelings made her physically sick. She didn't like other people having her all figured out. Min had the ability to expose her for everything she was and felt. It left Rae terrified.
Rae cleared her throat, trying to dodge the question. "Can I get a glass of water?"
"Mm," Min replied with a nod. "Cups are in the cupboard over there." He didn't even seem offended that she had entirely dodged the question, his demeanor the same as he tossed the steak into the frying pan.
Rae pulled out the water from the fridge and poured it slowly into her cup.
"Aren't you in pain right now? You haven't had your medication," she said, sliding down her mask as she took a sip of water, then put it right back up again.
Min shook his head. "I'm more comfortable without it. I've dealt with the pain for years; waking up the last few days with no pain at all - it hasn't felt right.""Min..." Rae's voice trailed off, the sadness in her voice unable to be concealed.
A smile danced on his soft, pink lips. "Yes, sunshine?"
"Do I need to be worried?" she asked quietly, leaning against the counter as she watched him sear the steak.
Min huffed and stuck out his tongue slightly between his teeth, cocking his head to the side.
"What has you worried?"
Rae shrugged. "A few things. For one, the words on your computer, they sounded-"
"Desperate? Trapped? Melancholy?" he filled in the blank for her, and she nodded. "Good, that is what I was going for. What did you think of them anyway?" he asked with curiosity filling his voice.
"Of the words?" Rae was confused about the direction he was going."Mm-hmm, it's a new song I was working on today. It's called Life Goes On."
A song, not a suicide note or a journal of someone who was depressed. A song.
"For a song, they seemed to have potential. You're very poetic," she complimented him.
Min raised his eyebrows. "Potential? Do you think so? I'll keep working on it then," he said, flipping the steak to cook the other side. "What else had you worried?" he asked.
"The bottle of whiskey on your coffee table," she answered honestly.
His voice was stern when giving his reply. "That wasn't for me, that was for Nim. I didn't have a sip. I'm not looking to cause trouble mixing alcohol with medication."
"Then why tell Ji-Sun you were going to resort to taking something stronger?" she interrogated.
Min laughed. "I wasn't referring to alcohol, I was referring to song writing and producing. Those are the greatest distractions for me. However, I suppose I can see where that may have been slightly dramatic, and misinterpreted, but I needed to say something to get you to come here," he admitted.
Rae put her glass down on the counter, studying Min as he plated the cooked steak onto a plate, ignoring that her mouth was watering at the sight of it.
"You baited me," she accused him.
"You avoided me," he shot back.
Both of them were silent as they studied one another, their bodies side by side, Min's eyes set on hers. He slowly approached her, Rae frozen in place as his face changed into a look of curiosity. Min swept his free hand across Rae's cheekbone, his finger looping underneath her mask and pulling it away, exposing her face.
Rae could hear her heartbeat as it thrummed in her ears, Min's proximity feeling intimate and intimidating, leaving Rae's stomach in tight knots. His eyes were eager as they scanned Rae's face, and her cheeks blushed at the attention.
She didn't know what to do. He had proven to be so unpredictable, and Rae felt like she was holding on for dear life to keep up with wherever his mood would take him."You don't need to wear this," he said, crumpling the mask in his hand.
Rae stuttered to get out any words. "I'm required to-"
"Not when you're here. I don't want you to try and hide from me anymore." His voice was firm, and the demand in his tone made Rae feel woozy.
He offered another coy smile before biting his lip, and smoothly wrapping his arm around the back of Rae's head, releasing the clip from her hair."But if you still insist on having to hide that beautiful face of yours, why not hide with this instead." He gently pulled her long hair in front of her face, brushing out the thick, blonde strands to fall over her cheeks. The grazing of his fingers felt like they left trails of fire on her skin. At this rate, she was worried she might actually melt.
He leaned in, his voice a husky whisper. "Breathe, sunshine. I don't need you passing out on me."
Rae immediately felt herself straining for air, not having realized that she had been holding her breath the entire time he had been near her. She took in a shaky breath, and Min pulled away, breaking the spell he had put her under. He snagged the plate off of the counter and moved it to the table, pulling out two chairs, side by side.
"Come and eat, before it gets cold," he said, taking a seat, and leaving Rae to calm down the raging storm that he just started in her heart.
