Min helped Rae pick out a plain grey sweater and a pair of jeans for her outfit for the evening. Min then washed up while Rae prepared some of the vegetables for grilling, her nerves subsiding, but other emotions had swept into their place.
As she worked, Rae tried to keep her mind off Min's heartwrenching past. She didn't want to create any tension or apprehension upon first meeting Min's family, especially since Min had made amends, but the information had still been difficult for Rae to let go. It was old for Min, but new for Rae. She didn't want to make any mistakes when meeting Min's family, and she wanted fair first impressions, so she did her best to suppress the hurt and defensiveness she felt. All she wanted was to protect Min.
Rae felt like a rock had settled in her stomach as she heard the doorbell ring. Min had finished getting ready just in time, his casual black long-sleeve sweater fitted perfectly to his slender body, and his silver glasses framing his onyx eyes. His hair was slightly wavy and had been stylishly pushed back to expose his smooth forehead, his silver hoop earrings peaking out behind his curls, and Rae's stomach flipped to butterflies instead as he winked at Rae from across the room.
"Ready, sunshine?" he asked, motioning for Rae to come over and take his hand. Rae let out a deep breath and secured a smile as she took Min's outstretched hand, and waited for him to open the door.
The first sight was Geum-Jae, and Rae did her best not to display the shock she was experiencing. Geum-Jae was nearly a spitting image of Min, it was obvious that they were brothers. They had the same nose and face shape. The only slight difference was that Geum-Jae had rounder eyes and slimmer lips than Min, and he seemed an inch or two taller, but even their haircut and style were the same, both of them parting their hair down the middle and Geum-Jae wearing a muted grey sweater.
Geum-Jae smiled with his lips, his black eyes sparkling as he soaked in the sight of Min.
"Yoongi-ah!" Geum-Jae pulled Min in for a side shoulder hug, and Min patted his brother's back.
"Hyung, it's good to see you," Min's voice was filled with genuine joy as he exchanged greetings with his brother.
Geum-Jae's smile remained as he looked at Rae, and bowed slightly, Rae mirroring him.
"Annyeonghaseyo, I'm Min Geum-Jae."
"Rae Clark," Rae said.
Rae heard the sound of a car lock, and then footsteps approached behind Geum-Jae.
Rae noticed Eun-Ju first. She was dressed in a beautiful faux fur coat and black tall boots. She wore thick black glasses that framed her round face. Her short, black, silky hair was loosely curled, and her eyes creased into a smile at the sight of Rae and Min.
Sang-Hoon had his arm wrapped around Eun-Ju's, helping her get safely to the doorstep as they slowly walked across the crunchy snow. Eun-Ju had thick, short, black hair, with square facial features. He wore thin, large silver glasses that displayed eyes the same eyes as Min's. He had on a navy wool coat and short brown boots. As he approached the door, Rae couldn't interrupt his expression, his eyes and demeanor stoic and poised as he watched Eun-Ju pull Min in for a tight hug. As Eun-Ju pulled away, Sang-Hoon stayed put, only acknowledging Min with a small bow.
Min cleared his throat and pulled Rae tightly to his side as he looked at his parents. "Abeoji, eomma, I would like you to meet my girlfriend, Rae Clark," Min couldn't contain his smirk like he couldn't believe the words were coming from his lips.
Eun-Ju eased the sudden awkwardness by shaking Sang-Hoon from her arm, and her hands immediately came to hold Rae's.
"I can't believe my eyes and ears. Girlfriend?" Eun-Ju exhaled in disbelief. "You're even more beautiful in person. I'm Eun-Ju, and this is Sang-Hoon," she motioned to her husband, who gave a silent nod, his expression unchanging. "I hope you will feel comfortable to speak casually with us. Min told us you prefer English, and we all look for opportunities to practice, so we hope it's all right if we use English for our conversations tonight?"
