Rae was speechless. She rarely found herself at a loss for words, but Min looking at her the way he was, sent Rae into full paralysis.
She didn't want to be a coward by not giving him an answer. In reality, her mind was flooding with them, she just couldn't seem to formulate the words. She didn't want to admit it, but she was fearful of the outcome.
The truth was, her thoughts had become consumed by Min. Her heart did race when she was with him. She was excited each day at the prospect of seeing him. She wanted to learn every detail about him and secretly wished more than once that she could reach out to take his hand or stay a bit longer just to be with him.
He was the first human she found herself not wanting to be separated from. His presence soothed her and excited her. Her insides felt like fireworks when she was with him, which was an absorbing feeling. But Rae knew her feelings alone weren't enough to justify acting upon them.
Rae felt forced to hold herself back. There was too much involved in pursuing a relationship with Min. It wouldn't be simple, and even though no one had said it, she almost felt like it wasn't allowed. It felt like he was untouchable. She knew the weight of it, and she didn't feel worthy of fitting the expectations of Min Yoongi's girlfriend.
Min quietly and patiently observed Rae. Rae felt her cheeks becoming hot under his gaze, and she knew it would soon be visible to Min. It didn't take long for him to notice, and to make matters worse, he took the opportunity to press the back of his hand against her cheek. He smirked, his tongue peeking out through his lips, his deadly habit leaving her breathless, and his hoop earrings catching the light and dazzling Rae even more.
"I'm sorry if I make you nervous, sunshine. I'm not trying to put pressure on you." His words slipped off his silver tongue and Rae knew she would believe anything he said to her. She knew in her gut that she could trust him, even with his ingratiating way of speaking.
Rae finally garnered the resolution to speak, daring herself to step out of her comfort zone. "I don't feel pressured by you. This is just new to me," she let out a shaky breath, Min's hand pushing back Rae's hair behind her ear, suddenly making her falter in her courage.
"What is new to you exactly?" he asked inquisitively, his hands now to himself as he intently listened to her response.
Rae sighed and sat up a little taller on the couch. Going against every screaming nerve and fiber in her body, she had to force herself not to run. She put her hands on her knees, rubbing her black scrub pants, trying to dissipate some of her nerves into the fabric.
"Being confused. I am usually very sure of myself and level-headed..." Rae's voice trailed off and she shook her head in embarrassment. "I didn't mean for that to sound smug or conceited," she tried to explain.
Min put up his hand to stop Rae. "It didn't sound conceited. You're a lot like me. I get mistaken for being arrogant often. Something about our circumspect personalities makes others uncomfortable." Min winked and Rae couldn't help but smile, Min's presence and observances once again calming her.
She loved that he seemed to understand her so profoundly. As he described his personality, and read hers like an open book, it made her trust him even more.
"Not to make you uneasy by asking, but what has you confused?" Min prodded.
Rae didn't hesitate this time, looking Min right in the eyes. "You. Everything about you. The way I feel about you. The way I wonder how you feel about me. The way I wonder how this would work if..." Rae stopped herself. She was struggling to even say the words out loud. She was terrified of what Min would think if she did.
Min nodded his head slowly, his eyes fixated on his hand, appearing deep in thought.
"What if we simplify it? Let's take out any possibility of confusion, and have black and white answers. No gray area," he proposed. Min outstretched his hand to tug Rae's body in his direction. His following words, drenched in his deep voice, sent Rae into a state of euphoria.
"I like you, sunshine. Simple as that."
It took many moments before Rae's mind could process what Min had just said. The time they had together had seemed like an eternity, but in reality, it had barely been over a week. How could things be moving this fast? Min was her patient. Rae shook her head, convinced she had completely lost her mind.
"You barely know me," Rae countered, trying to lamely put up a wall.
"I know enough. I am a quick judge of character, and I am not one to hold back on the things I want to pursue." Min leaned in again, repeating the words. "I like you."
It was difficult to reply when she felt like she was floating, but she managed to get the words to quietly slip out in return. "I like you, too."
Min didn't hold back the toothless smile he gave, and the light in his eyes from her response. "Perfect, that was uncomplicated."
Rae felt herself backpedaling as all her fears began to surface. "But there are so many factors-"
Min quietly lifted his hand again to pause Rae's spiral, his collectedness bringing her reassurance. "Black and white, remember? What do two people do when they like each other?"
"They date," she replied cautiously. "But are you even allowed to do that?" she sincerely asked.
Min shook his head back and forth, laughing at her question. "Naneun naega wonhaneun daelo mueos-ideun hal su issda." I can do whatever the hell I feel like.
When Min spoke in Korean, in his Daegu accent, with his low voice, it gave Rae chills. Add on the firm and confident Min, and it was next-level. He was indisputable, and he did what he wanted to do. His blithe personality could only be described in one way: sexy. It was extremely sexy.
Rae felt her heart race as she was embarrassed to admit how attractive Min was to her at that moment. She cleared her throat, and stood up, trying to shake off her tempting thoughts.
"You make it sound so straightforward," Rae nervously chuckled.
Min nodded. "Mm-hmm. It is that straightforward. Don't overthink it." Min stood up and placed his free hand on Rae's shoulder, his body leaning into her back as he hovered his lips next to her ear. "Let's date, sunshine." His hand trailed down her arm, his hand intertwining with hers, and she could hear the sincerity and desperation in his voice. "Trust me. I promise you won't regret it."
