Rae hadn't driven old blue in over two years, but the smell of the dusty old cloth seat covers and Steve's leather boots were reassuring scents to Rae. The window that didn't roll down, the bouncy ride from shocks that desperately needed to be replaced, the farm tools rattling in the back of the truck bed, and the crack in the windshield that they never would pay to repair, they were all reminders that she was home.
The drive from the hospital to the house was about thirty minutes. Rae passed by snow-covered fields that were shadowed by large mountains. Seeing the homes of neighbors she had grown up with made her heart swell. She looked forward to the Zimmerman's Christmas inflatable display every year which had grown to over 40 different Christmas scenes and characters. She had missed the Stoke's synchronized light display at their egg farm that Rae would watch and listen to every year. She loved seeing the Fenn's porch from the road and how they decorated it lavishly in homemade wreaths and garlands from the surrounding woods and pines. Each house, each Christmas display, the same as they always were, and the nostalgia was sobering for Rae.
Rae turned at the corner that led to her house, passing by the gate that proudly said "Clark Farms". She drove down the long, icy driveway until she pulled in front of their house. Rae took a deep breath in as she looked at the place she called home.
Rae couldn't believe how different Montana was from Korea. Rae had gotten accustomed to the sky-high buildings, the endless stairs and hills, and a variety of styles for the homes and apartments. Seoul had its own charm in its own way, but Montana was drastically different.
Rae's home was inherited from her Grandpa Clark, the house was almost 100 years old. It had its own quirks and charms, but most importantly it had memories. Grandpa Clark had built the small four-bedroom, 2-bath house himself, laying each brick and piece of wood that made up the cabin-like mountainside farmhouse. It wasn't new, it wasn't fancy, but it was Rae's favorite place on earth.
Stepping inside, Rae was greeted by the familiar scent of Lorena's homemade sourdough bread that she must've baked that morning. The wood walls were decorated with Christmas lights, and the cloth sofas in the living room were starting to get tattered and worn. The fireplace displayed the last burning coals from the night before to heat the house. Rae walked past the credenza that showed all the random knick-knacks they had collected as a family over the years and walked up the creaky wood stairs to her bedroom.
Rae's room had remained untouched, exactly as she left it when she moved to Korea. Her white metal framed queen bed was still adorned with a patch quilt blanket Rae and Lorena had made for her 12th birthday. Rodeo trophies were hanging on her shelves, and her guitar was still in its case, displayed neatly in the corner of her room.
Rae sighed and sunk into the familiar bed. The sleep she had gotten at the hospital was anything but restful, but before Rae would allow herself to fall back to sleep, she had to make a few phone calls.
Rae checked in with Chang-Woo first. He insisted she take all the time she needed, and that she hadn't taken any sick or vacation days yet that year. He encouraged her to stay at least for the holidays and that her patients were being well taken care of.
Rae FaceTimed Ji-Sun next. Rae had missed her best friend, even if it had only been a few days since they saw each other last. Rae had gotten so used to having her around that it felt empty and odd without Ji-Sun's obnoxious, yet infectious personality.
Rae and Ji-Sun caught up about work and Ji-Sun's final plans for Christmas. Rae disclosed Miles's crush on Ji-Sun and Ji-Sun was more than amused, in fact, she almost seemed interested.
"Please tell me you aren't intrigued with my brother," Rae desperately pleaded.
Ji-Sun shrugged. "You can't deny that he is pretty good-looking, Rae. But don't worry, I have no plans of moving to Montana or doing long-distance, but you can tell him I think he's cute," Ji-Sun concluded.
