"Change districts?" Chang-Woo asked confused.
Rae was mortified as she drove away, and impulsively she called Chang-Woo to try and immediately bail herself out. This was her attempt at trying to run away, the only way she thought she could."I wonder if someone else might be a better fit for this area," Rae suggested.
Chang-Woo paused. "It's only been two days, Rae. Did something happen?"
"No, no, nothing at all," she fibbed.
"You've never requested anything of me before. You're certain everything is OK?"
"I just miss seeing my old patients," Rae lied, trying to cover up her real motives behind the call.
Chang-Woo chuckled. "I didn't realize that was important to you."
"I've worked with some of my old patient's for over six months, I've formed close relationships with most of them," Rae dug deeper into her reasoning.
"Fair point. How about this, why don't you see your old patients tomorrow to check in on how they're doing with the transition, and I'll have Ji-Sun take your new patients for tomorrow."
Rae hesitated. Chang-Woo's offer was only a day break. Rae was hoping to remove herself from the situation entirely. Maybe if she agreed to it, then her patients would prefer Ji-Sun's charm anyways and ask to have Chang-Woo keep the change. It's all Rae could hope for.
"Sure, that would help," Rae said.
"Sounds good, I'll make the arrangements. Annyeong." Then the line went dead, and Rae exhaled, able to breathe a bit better the rest of the drive home.
————
Rae's phone buzzed twice, pulling her attention from her mystery novel she had cuddled up with on the couch.
MILES: DID YOU WATCH IT?
RAE: I DID
MILES: AND...?
RAE: IT WAS GOOD
MILES: GOOD? JUST GOOD?
RAE: OK...GREAT?
MILES: I WAS WAITING FOR YOU TO SAY REVOLUTIONARY, RAE RAE. DON'T BE STUBBORN IN ADMITTING GREATNESS WHEN YOU SEE IT.
RAE: 🙄
Rae sighed. Miles text had brought Yoongi to the forefront of her mind again, when she was desperately trying to bury the embarrassment she had felt earlier. Rae hadn't had the mental capacity to even write her clinic notes, but she knew she needed to.
She pulled out her laptop and forced herself to replay the visit in her mind so she could chart.NOTES: PATIENT WAS IN A DIFFERENT MOOD TODAY, LESS LETHARGIC. APPETITE RETURNING, INCISION STILL HEALING WELL. PATIENT DISPLAYED MODERATE IRRITABILITY. PAIN MEDICATION GIVEN.
Rae's fingered hovered over the keyboard after she wrote her last sentence. She wanted to keep writing about Yoongi's comments, and especially the nickname she was certain she misheard, but she ended her chart notes there, hoping tomorrow would give her the reset she needed to return to her normal self.
________
Rae hadn't entirely lied to Chang-Woo. She may not have missed all her patients, but she certainly missed one. Eun-Song had been a patient of Rae's for almost six months, and her eccentric personality was always refreshing.
"Where have you been?" Eun-Song gripped tightly to Rae's arms, pulling her to sit next to her in the sitting room. Mr. Fluffers, Eun-Song's persian cat, sashayed over to Rae, his tail sweeping in front of her face. Rae couldn't help but smile, petting her old friend.
"Hello Mr. Fluffers," she greeted him, brushing out his long fur. Rae turned to Eun-Song, ready to answer her question. "I'm sure they told you I was transferred to a new area."
Eun-Song shook her head. "You abandoned me," she pouted.
Rae took Eun-Song's strong hand and patted it gently. "I did not abandon you. I'm here now, aren't I?"
"Are you staying?" Eun-Song raised her eyebrows. "I was about to file a complaint that they took my favorite nurse from me."
Rae laughed. "Eun-Song, you only have a few days left of treatment anyways, what good would that do?"
"I wanted you to myself until the very end, but the other nurse said you moved to a fancier area. If you needed fussier patients you could have just asked, I can be very needy too," Eun-Song gave a mocking wink.
Rae laughed. "You know you were my most demanding patient, right?"
"Were? As in past tense? Has someone already taken my place?" She asked in bewilderment at the thought.
Before Rae could answer, her phone rang, and Ji-Sun's contact came up.
"Sorry, Eun-Song, I need to step out to take this."
Eun-Song motioned Rae away, leaving her to take the call.
Rae went out to the porch, and quietly answered.
"Ji-Sun, I'm with a patient," she whispered into the phone.
"Oh good, glad to hear one of us is doing their job," Ji-Sun said sarcastically. It wasn't often Rae saw Ji-Sun irritated, but it was evident in her tone that she wasn't happy. "Rae, you need to come to UN Village, right now," she demanded.
There was an urgency in her voice that left Rae unsettled, and the mention of UN Village made her stomach drop. Rae pulled back her phone to peek at the time. It was nearly 5 P.M. If she went to UN Village tonight, she wouldn't even make it there until at least 6 P.M.
"Is it an emergency?" Rae hesitated into the phone.
"Duh! Of course it is! When do I ever call you at work?"she hissed.
Rae hesitated. "Can you elaborate on this emergency before I clock in for overtime and drive an additional hour out of my way?"
"You want the short version of it?" Ji-Sun huffed. "Your stuffy patient that lives on the top floor of UN Village - who's chart notes I can't even read by the way because I need to sign an NDA first, all I can read on there is that he's a week post op and taking medication - well, he refuses to open the door for me, he says he will only see you." Rae could hear the offense in Ji-Sun's voice as she made her report.
Rae's throat went dry. "What?" she croaked out her only thought.
Ji-Sun sighed. "His pain medication wore off hours ago, Rae. I tried to explain that to him through the doorbell video feed but all he kept saying was if he couldn't see you, then he wouldn't take his pain medication tonight, and that he had something stronger available anyway."
"Stronger?" Rae asked confused.
"Yes, Rae, stronger! I don't know what it is. Alcohol maybe? Or hard drugs? All I know is he was extremely impolite, threatening, possibly out of his mind, and you need to come fix it," Ji-Sun insisted.
"Why does it have to be me?" Rae groaned,
stomping her foot like a child on the porch."Look, I don't know what you did to him, but I've been trying to convince him to open the door for over an hour. I'm going home, and this is my official referral to you. I'm hanging up now, but I will be sure to grab some chocolate for you when you get home as a thank you for you service. Annyeong," Ji-Sun said, leaving Rae to decide what fate she was willing to tempt by visiting Yoongi tonight.
All the possible scenarios scared her senseless, but she couldn't outrun any of them this time. If something happened to Yoongi, it would be her fault, and that situation made Rae more uncomfortable than any of the others.
Rae sighed, said her goodbye's to Eun-Song, and typed UN Village into her navigation system, while taking the long drive time as an opportunity to prepare herself as best she could for what was to come.
