Min was determined to push through the discomfort of the physical therapy exercises, his mind stronger than his pain. Rae quickly realized that Min was an expert at hiding his suffering. The only hint of him struggling was in the tiny droplets of sweat that lined his brow, and a sound that Min played off as a cough, but Rae could hear a grunting sound of pain hidden behind it.
"Let's take a break for today," Rae said, assisting Min's arm back into his sling.
Min let out a deep breath, closing his eyes tightly. "It's getting easier," he lied through gritted teeth. "How soon can I stop wearing the sling?"
Rae began putting away her supplies as she spoke. "You could probably stop wearing your sling by the end of the week, as long as you're extremely careful. Now that your stitches have healed and you can do the exercises on your own, honestly, by next week, you won't need me to visit." Rae chose to answer him truthfully.
Min's face became serious as he looked at Rae. "I will still need you every day, that isn't going to change."
"Well according to your doctor, you won't need me as your nurse," Rae reiterated.
"Hopefully you'll be something even better." Min lit up with a brief smile. "If I could have it my way, I would like to terminate whatever contract and agreement there is between my company and your employer, the sooner the better."
Rae raised her eyebrows. "Why is that?"
Min shrugged. "Because I think that would make you feel more comfortable, and you won't feel like you have to tip-toe around the NDA you signed."
Rae slowly nodded, closing her tote of supplies as she finished charting her notes.
"You're not wrong, it would make me more comfortable, and it does sound nice not having the NDA hanging over me. My brother and best friend would especially be thrilled," Rae joked.
Min didn't hesitate. "Consider it done, I will call Nim right now," Min said, pulling out his phone and pressing the call button.
"Wait, right now?" Rae responded in surprise.
"Why put it off?" Min countered her concern. Rae was shocked by his urgency, but before she could interject again, Min was already talking with Nim on the phone.
She translated the conversation in her head as Min spoke to his manager in Korean. Min was so absolute in his requests, that he seemed to easily convince Nim to move forward with terminating the agreement. Min ended the call and placed his phone back in his pocket.
"Well, sunshine, you're officially fired. You are no longer my nurse, I am no longer your patient, and there is no longer an NDA between us."
Rae couldn't help but chuckle in disbelief at Min's efficiency when he wanted something. "Just like that?" she asked.
Min nodded, an eager smile proudly tugging at the corner of his lips. "Just like that."
The question hovered in Rae's mind - if their professional relationship had come to an end, what did that mean for the two of them? Min had said they were dating, but Rae wasn't entirely sure of the extent of what that meant, and she hadn't been ready to ask. It felt too soon. But with the extra freedoms of no longer having Min under her professional care and not having it as a crutch to fall back on for slowing things down, Rae was nervous about the next steps that might be taken in their relationship.
The shift in the air between them was palpable. She could see Min was deeply thinking about something as he studied Rae, while Rae observed the sun was beginning to set, and felt it was her cue to go home.
"It's getting late, I should get going and let you get some sleep," Rae encouraged.
Min immediately shook his head. "You aren't my nurse anymore," he reminded her.
Rae raised her eyebrows at his fast rebuttal. "No, I'm not, but I care about you, and you are still healing. You need to rest," Rae reiterated.
Min sighed, stepping in front of Rae to block her exit. "I appreciate the concern, but you can't leave yet. I told you I had twenty questions. I won't get any rest until you answer them."
Rae hesitated, taking in Min's expression to gauge if he was really being serious. His dark eyes were set on hers, and his expression was crystal clear. The intensity in his eyes made Rae shiver, and she couldn't help but feel compelled to stay.
"I didn't think you were serious when you said that," Rae said, stumbling over her words, suddenly nervous that Min wanted to expose even more of her when she already felt he could see right through her. Letting him in more made her both exhilarated and terrified.
"I absolutely was being serious. Especially now since we don't have an NDA to worry about," Min reaffirmed his intentions.
Rae exhaled and nodded slowly, trying to keep her composure. "OK, I will stay for your twenty questions. On one condition."
Min cocked one of his eyebrows, his head tilting to the side as he looked at Rae in amusement. "What's your condition?"
"You have to answer twenty questions for me too," Rae stated her condition.
Rae felt it was only fair that if Min was getting more information about her, that she should also be given the same privilege in return. Rae didn't know the depth of Min's questions, but Rae wasn't one to easily share. If she was going to put herself in a position of being vulnerable, she needed to know she wasn't going to be doing it alone.
Min nodded his head, biting his lip, his expression one of satisfaction and intrigue. "Well, we no longer have an NDA to worry about." He paused, considering the proposition a few seconds longer before he motioned to the couch. "Let's take a seat."
