Rae felt like she was undergoing an interrogation. Miles had asked every question he could about Min. Rae assumed Ji-Sun would be the most invasive in questioning, but if Ji-Sun reacted even a fraction of the way Miles had, then Rae never wanted to tell Ji-Sun.
Miles was ecstatic about Rae's new relationship. He was already discussing big plans for Rae's wedding and having Min as a brother-in-law. Rae didn't have it in her to put a halt to his future planning considering he had just almost died, so Rae let him have his hopes and listened to him paint a picture of her future that she honestly hoped for too.
All the talking and excitement had worn Miles out pretty quickly. Miles had fallen asleep, and Rae felt she finally had a minute to breathe. The quiet stillness of the hospital at night was eerily familiar, bringing Rae back to times of the night shift during her nursing program rotations in the States. She knew the intensity of everything that occurred at the hospital intimidated some, but she thrived off of it.
Rae walked to the nurse's station and asked for a couple of blankets and a pillow. She stopped by the snack bar and got a juice and small cheese plate, snacking on it as she walked the halls to stretch her legs. After she was finished, she made her way back to Miles's room, setting up a makeshift bed on the recliner. The monitor's beeping may have bothered some, but to Rae, it was like a sound machine, steady and consistent as she drifted off to sleep.
_____________
Rae jolted awake, her heart racing as she came out of her dream. She sat up to find her parents and brother in front of her, playing a card game on Miles's bed, each of them surprised by Rae's reaction.
"Are you alright, sweetheart?" Lorena asked with concern.
Rae exhaled, nodding her head. "I'm fine, I just forgot where I was for a moment."
Miles, who seemed to have even more energy than yesterday, had a wide grin on his face. "Did you have any dreams? Any about Min?" Miles teased.
Rae narrowed her eyes at Miles, folding the blankets under her arms as she stood up from the chair to stretch her sore body. Sleeping on a plane and then a stiff hospital recliner had not been great for her.
"Miles, can you talk about anything else, for even a second? Or is my boyfriend your new obsession?" Rae complained.
Miles considered the question for a moment before answering, placing a card down on the bed, and Steve groaned in reply. Miles was always exceptionally good at card and board games. None of Rae's family ever won, but they were one of Miles's favorite things. Rae was certain her parents were obliged to play to help keep him entertained.
"Isn't he your new obsession?" Miles countered. "I can't believe you don't want to talk about it!" he accused. "I may have gotten the details last night, but Mom equally wants to hear all about Suga," Miles pointed at Lorena, and Lorena gave a sheepish smile.
Lorena nodded. "I do want to hear about it, sweetie. Miles told us just a bit, and I still can't wrap my head around it," Lorena admitted.
"I don't wanna hear about it if that makes you feel any better," Steve huffed with his Montana, cowboy accent.
Lorena shot warning glares at Steve, swatting at his arm. "Steven Clark! You take that back! This is your daughter's boyfriend you are speakin about. You apologize," Lorena reprimanded him, wagging her finger in his direction.
Steve scrunched his nose. "She's my baby girl, Lorena, it's my job not to like her boyfriend. For a time at least," he concluded.
Miles rolled his eyes, throwing his hands in the air. "Dad, he is impossible not to like. I know you don't care about much his music and producing success, but he is a good dude. The guy is a UN envoy and UNICEF ambassador. He donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to charities," Miles defended Min.
"He does?" Lorena beamed, practically soaring with pride over the news.
Steve waved his hand and grunted. "You can spew all the accolades you want, I ain't givin any support until I meet him and can judge him for myself."
Lorena swatted at Steve again. "You stop being so harsh. Rae wouldn't be here right now if Min hadn't helped arrange a flight for her. If anything, you should be calling to thank him," Lorena added.
Rae found her hand covering her face as she shook her head. "Y'all," Rae's accent was coming back too quickly being home. "As much as I appreciate your unwavering support for my new relationship, and for Min, can we take five minutes to not talk about my boyfriend?"
The room went quiet for a moment, her family cautiously looking at one another to see if anyone would break the silence. Miles couldn't contain himself.
"If you don't want to talk about Min, can we talk about Ji-Sun?" he grinned. "Maybe you can FaceTime her?"
Rae had a disgusted look cross her face as she looked at her intrusive brother. "Eww, Miles, are you into my best friend?" Rae accused.
Miles shrugged. "Ji-Sun is gorgeous..."
"Ooook, that is it for me today," Rae said, waving her hands for Miles to stop. "I am going to go home and take a nap. You all enjoy entertaining Miles and I will see you all later," Rae said, waving her hand goodbye as she grabbed the keys to the truck, and drove home.
