Rae made her way through the bright white halls of the hospital, searching for Miles's room number. #330. The elevator felt exceptionally slow, and the hospital larger than normal, but she knew it likely had more to do with how anxious she was to see Miles and her family, and that her nerves were making time sluggishly pass.

When Rae finally came to the room, she found the door had been cracked open as the nurse was stepping out. Rae rushed inside before the door had time to shut, and tears immediately started streaming down her face.

Rae's mom, Lorena, and her dad, Steve, were on Miles's right side, holding his hand as they cried. Lorena's dark blonde hair was pulled back in a messy braid, her olive eyes heavy as she looked at Miles. Her face was puffy and red from hours of crying, but she still managed to look put together, a trait Lorena had always had.

Steve's light brown wavy hair was hidden under his favorite baseball cap, and his blue eyes looked bloodshot from exhaustion. Rae knew they both had a long 24 hours as they waited for Miles to wake up from surgery. Both of her parents looked emotionally and physically spent.

Miles was lying down on a hospital bed, wires and monitors beeping and pumping around him. His short blonde hair was a matted and oily mess, and his long legs reached almost to the end of the bed. Miles had his eyes only partially open, his breathing heavy and labored, but a small, weak smile spread across his lips.

"Rae Rae," he whispered.

Rae ran to his side, grasping his other hand as she looked between Miles and her parents. She reached out to grab her parent's free hands, relieved and grateful that Miles was conscious.

"You're awake," Rae exhaled with relief.

Miles gave a slow, single nod. "I had to be. After all, you did come all the way from Korea to see me." Miles smiled again. "And left Agust D for me too. You're a good sister, you know that?"

Rae couldn't help but laugh through her tears as Miles showed he was entirely his normal, usual, teasing self, just a little slower and quieter post-surgery.

Rae wiped her eyes and looked at her parents. "What did the nurse say?"

"He's going to be just fine. They will keep him here for observation for another two nights, then he will be all cleared to go home," Steve reported.

"Just in time for Christmas," Lorena added. "I can't believe I have both of you here for Christmas," she beamed as she looked back and forth at Miles and Rae.

"I can't believe it either. I have missed you all so much," Rae admitted. She looked at Miles again, patting his leg. "And I will take good care of you when you leave here."

Miles attempted to roll his eyes. "I can take care of myself," he stubbornly replied.

"Says the guy impaled by a tree," Rae joked.

"Make all the fun you want, but when it happens to you, I won't be laughing," he pretended to be offended, turning up his nose.

"I don't think I will be attending another tree-cutting day after this. I'm sorry Dad, but I think we will need to settle for a plastic tree from here on out," Rae chuckled, knowing how much her dad despised artificial trees.

Steve shook his head. "Absolutely not, but I will settle for a tree farm instead," he countered.

"Fair enough," Rae laughed. "I am grateful you are alright, Miles. I was worried about all of you," Rae said, looking at her exhausted family.

"It's OK, everyone is OK, and we are all together now. That is what matters," Lorena said, coming now to Rae's side to embrace her in a tight hug.

"You must be extremely jet-lagged. Let's get you home, sweetheart," Lorena said to Rae.

Rae shook her head. "It's morning in Korea right now, so I am bright-eyed and awake," Rae lied, doing her best to put on the facade of having all the energy in the world. "You and Dad head home and get some rest, you can switch me later."

"Are you sure?" Lorena hesitated on the offer.

Rae nodded. "I'm a nurse, mom, remember? I've been trained to work untraditional and long hours. Staying with Miles is not a big deal for me, I promise."

Lorena cautiously looked at Steve for his input, and his tired eyes were his answer. Lorena nodded in defeat, bent down to kiss Miles on the forehead, and took Steve's hand as they left the room.

"We will see you both in a few hours. Try and get some rest," Lorena said.

Rae smiled and gave her parents a thumbs up. "I've got this from here. See you soon."

As soon as Rae's parents shut the door, Miles had his gaze locked on Rae, his eyebrows raised and his expression suddenly not so fatigued.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" Rae asked, taken aback.

Miles raised his eyebrows. "Because you have nowhere to go, and I have a million unanswered questions. Take a seat, Sis, and tell me how on earth you are in a relationship with Agust D."
