Rae couldn't sleep. She could always sleep on flights, especially international flights, but not this time. This time she was worried about Miles, her thoughts consumed with all the possible outcomes of his injury. She was restless, even in the comfiest chair on the plane.
Min had done exactly what he had promised - he got Rae on the soonest flight back to Montana. He took out all the hassle and worry of booking the flight and handling everything for Rae. He had Nim drive her to her apartment to pack, escorted her to the airport, and booked her in first-class, a luxury she never would have dreamed of.
While Min had used all of his connections, Rae used her nursing connections to order a rapid COVID test that allowed her to leave immediately. She asked Ji-Sun to make arrangements to cover her patients while Rae was away, and Chang-Woo approved a temporary leave of absence while she went back home. Rae had called the hospital that Miles had been taken to and tried to get a better idea of what was happening so she could give her parents some clearer answers.
The nurses told Rae that Miles had suffered a pneumothorax and it had been severe enough to require surgery. Luckily the surgery itself would only require Miles to remain in the hospital for a few days - just until they could ensure his lung could inflate on its own. However, it didn't address the oxygen depletion. After Miles's lung was punctured, his oxygen levels dropped significantly, to the point that he had lost consciousness and hadn't yet regained it. Until Miles was awake and proper tests could be performed, there was no way of knowing if there would be any long-term side effects. The unknown was the hardest part of it all. All Rae could do was wait, and she prayed there would be answers ready for her as soon as she arrived in Montana.
Rae had over an 18-hour flight, and she knew stressing and worrying for the duration of it would not benefit her. She needed to be well rested so she could be the support that her family needed. She needed to find a way to relax.
Rae realized there was no better spot on the plane to be in for a chance to unwind than in first-class. Rae's seat fully reclined into a bed, allowing her to lie down as she ate a fancy plate of snacks the stewardess had brought her. She was used to peanuts or almonds, but not an entire variety plate of sweets and snacks to munch on. Rae decided to use the Wi-Fi option that was provided to first-class passengers free of charge, allowing her to text back and forth with Ji-Sun and Min for the flight.
Min and Ji-Sun had been asking for updates; they were both worried about her. Having them to talk to, even if it was only through text, was extremely comforting to Rae. However, what she had really wished for was that Min could be with her - holding her hand and soothing her. His presence was grounding and pacifying. She knew if he was with her, that her anxiety would significantly decrease.
That was when the idea first came to Rae. Min couldn't physically be by her side, but she had a benefit most people would never have in their relationship - videos. An endless variety of content videos, all with Min. Rae hadn't dove much deeper into the videos of Min because she was worried it would give her a false precept of who he was before she made her own judgments of him. Now that time had passed, and now that they were in a relationship, she felt like an 18-hour plane ride was the perfect time to take the opportunity to learn more about her boyfriend and his other band members.
Rae pulled up YouTube and Weverse, scrolling through content. She watched interviews, Run BTS, music videos, live performances, and travel videos of the group. The long flight passed by faster than Rae would've expected. She had found herself immersed and laughing at each video she watched. Every flash of Min on the screen would bring a smile to Rae's face, and it would take away any unease. Min had been her antidote, and she felt spoiled that with the tap of her finger, she could instantly be soothed.
Of course, Min physically being with her was what she wanted most, but the hours she spent going down the rabbit hole of content on Min had been a welcome substitute and distraction for the time being.
Rae hadn't realized that she had fallen asleep watching an interview until the captain's voice had come over the speaker of the plane.
"HOWDY FOLKS, THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING. WE HAVE BEGUN OUR FINAL DESCENT. WE HOPE YOU HAVE HAD AN ENJOYABLE FLIGHT AND WANT TO BE THE FIRST TO WELCOME YOU TO THE BEAUTIFUL STATE OF MONTANA."
Rae peered out her window, taking in the snow-capped mountains that were now visibly below her. Immediate relief washed over her as she saw the familiar landscape that she loved so much, and that she hadn't seen in so long. Thanks to Min, Rae was home for the first time in almost two years.
The plane landed, and Rae was privileged to be the first off the jetway - another benefit to first class. Rae called her Mom to let her know she had landed and was on her way to the hospital. Min had taken it a step further and had arranged for a driver to pick up Rae at the airport so that her family wouldn't have to worry about another thing.
As soon as Rae was in the car she called Min, anxious to hear his voice. He didn't hesitate at all and picked up on the first ring.
"Hey, sunshine. Did you make it back to the States safely?" he asked, his voice deeper than usual. Rae looked at her analog watch and realized it was morning time in Korea.
"I did, and comfortably I might add thanks to you."
Min sighed with relief. "Good. The private driver picked you up? No issues?"
"None, I am on my way to the hospital now," Rae confirmed.
"I sincerely hope Miles is OK," Min whispered.
Rae was quiet in reply as she choked back the emotions rushing to the surface. "Me too. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to give you a proper goodbye, and that I bailed on our date," Rae blubbered into the phone.
Min's voice was stern but sincere. "You do not ever need to apologize for doing what you need to do. The most important place for you to be right now is at home with your family. Your main focus is being present where you are. Don't worry about me. You just let me know if there is anything I can do for you from afar. You can call me again when you have a chance and you can update me then."
Through her gratitude, Rae let out a shaky breath, holding back the tears beginning to form. "I don't know how to thank you for everything you have done for me."
Min was silent on the phone for a moment, heavily contemplating his reply. "Just like you don't need to apologize for doing what you need to do, you also don't need to thank me for doing what is right. I will always do what is best for you. Your first, sunshine. Always."
Rae felt speechless at Min's perfect words. He was perfect, and she struggled again to comprehend how she'd become so fortunate to be dating someone like him. Someone that she thought couldn't possibly exist - someone she thought was only written about in fiction stories. She couldn't help but wonder how this was her life now; how he was part of her life now.
Rae's chest felt like it was going to explode from the overwhelming emotions that were bubbling up inside of her. Although she didn't say it out loud, one clear thought had crossed her mind. She wanted to tell him the truth. The truth was, Rae was falling in love with Min Yoongi.
