Min remained calm and collected as multiple bodyguards escorted Rae and Min to the tinted black Hyuandi that awaited them. As they approached the last set of doors to exit the airport, Nim rushed out of the car, ushering Rae and Min back into the airport as an onslaught of flashes followed behind him.
"How bad is it?" Rae's eyes were wide and worried as she observed the largely gathered crowd of reporters outside.
Nim's face was grim as he handed his phone to Min to show him the photo that had spread like wildfire all over the internet. Someone had snapped a picture of Rae and Min, hand in hand, walking onto the private jet for their departure back to Korea.
"I didn't think there would be any ARMY in the middle of a small town in Montana that would even recognize me," Min said in an exasperated breath.
"My brother is an ARMY," Rae pointed out.
"Exactly why I thought he was probably the only one in your town of two thousand people," Min explained.
"I think you underestimate your popularity," Nim argued.
"Rae didn't know about me," Min said through a tight-lipped smile.
"That is the exception, not the rule," Nim reaffirmed.
Rae shook her head and let out a long sigh. "I am so sorry, I didn't mean to draw attention to us," Rae timidly whispered, holding back tears.
Min tugged Rae's arm, forcing her attention to him. "Do not apologize. You're not the one invading people's privacy and spreading photos without their permission. You have nothing to feel sorry for or guilty for. Understood?" Min's eyes searched Rae's, imploring her to agree.
Rae nodded quickly, swallowing the cries that wanted to escape her. "What do we do?" Rae asked.
Nim cleared his throat and looked hesitantly at Min before answering. "If you were taking my suggestions, I would say you should leave separately-"
"No." Min abruptly and firmly interrupted
"Min, hear him out," Rae said, patting his arm gently as she nervously smiled at Nim who was shifting uncomfortably under Min's burning stare.
Min didn't move his eyes from his manager. "No. I won't let you leave my side. You are not going separately, it is too dangerous."
"Dangerous? What do you mean dangerous?" Rae croaked.
Min closed his eyes, letting out a grimace. "I'm sorry, sunshine, I should have discussed this more with you, the protocols we would need to take. I just thought we would have more time."
Rae felt too stunned to speak, the new information a weight on her shoulders as she processed Min's concerns.
"Have they identified her yet?" Min asked Nim.
Nim was silent as his head hung low in a somber nod.
Min's jaw went slack as he clenched his hands into fists. "They always work fast. Have you notified her family?"
Nim nodded. "We have already made requests to their local police to patrol for reporters. Rae's family is safe and aware of the situation."
"They already know who I am? And my family?" Rae whispered her thoughts out loud. "What about Ji-Sun?" Rae inquired, panicking for her best friend.
"We already have Hybe staff escorting her to a safe location until we can verify the security of your apartment. We will have staff there at all times to ensure no one tries to break in or make attempts to contact you. Anyone that does approach will be served restraining orders on site."
"I'm still trying to understand why it isn't safe?" Rae's voice trembled with each word.
"Most ARMY are nothing but supportive to the boys. However, a select few can take things further, and harassment can be an issue. We are just taking precautions. None of the members have had a girlfriend, and we aren't entirely certain what the reactions of some fans might be. We don't want any harm to come to you, your family, friends, or Min because of this," Nim elaborated.
Rae shut her eyes tightly. She didn't have the courage to say it out loud, especially with how insistent Min was that this wasn't her fault, but deep down, she knew it was too good to be true. She knew pretending they could have a normal relationship wasn't going to work. She knew there was a reason she felt like she was in the wrong or doing something she wasn't supposed to by having feelings for Min.
The world would have an opinion of their relationship, and she so easily dismissed that because of her own wants. Rae wanted Min so badly that she didn't pause to consider the repercussions it would entail to her loved ones. She had been selfish for the first time in her life and she felt she was paying the consequences for allowing her heart to win over her head. She could not live with herself if anything happened to her family, to Ji-Sun, and especially to Min. If the knowledge of their relationship being leaked to the world put him in any danger, Rae would never be able to forgive herself. If it hurt his image, his career, all that he worked for, all that he loved and held dear, just for the sake of being with her, it would ruin her. How much more selfish could she allow herself to be?
Min snapped Rae back to reality as he slipped Rae's phone from her hand and gave it to Nim.
"What are you doing?" she asked in a panic.
"It is best to give Nim your phone until we know that no one has shared your number or location, and until your social media profiles are safe. He will have our security team place all the needed protection software on your phone and return it to you when they're done. If your family or Ji-Sun needs to contact you, they can use my number. It is already secure," Min calmly explained.
Nim tucked the phone into his pocket. "I will have it back to you by the end of the day, Rae. I will take you both to a safe house until everything settles down."
"A safe house?" Rae repeated.
"It should be only for a few days. We can usually get a handle on these things fairly quickly," Nim reassured her.
Min nodded. "We will get this handled, sunshine, I promise. Do you trust me?"
Rae looked into Min's dark eyes, the deep pools of onyx peering into her heart and shaking her to her core. Rae was terrified, but she had to be honest. Even with the discussions of all that could go wrong and the risks she was under, looking at Min and his quiet confidence, Rae had never felt safer. She knew she could trust him. She knew it would all somehow be OK.
"I trust you," she affirmed.
Min's infectious side smirk spread across his face. "Good. Then forgive me, but if the news is already out, I see no reason to hide you away."
Min intertwined his hand in Rae's and confidently pulled her behind him, pushing past Nim who thought better about stopping Min in his tracks and letting him pass. They stepped out into the cold and Min casually threw an arm around Rae, pulling her closely into his side to shield her from the cameras that were blinding her.
As Min approached the car, he grabbed the handle, politely opened it for Rae, and let her go inside first, then followed behind and Nim quickly shut the door before taking off from the scene.
Min was grinning ear to ear as he looked at Rae, excitement filling his eyes as Rae's heart was thrumming in her chest. "Why are you so happy right now?" Rae asked, nearly out of breath and sincerely confused by Min's demeanor.
Min reached out for Rae's hand and kissed the top of it softly, sending shivers down Rae's spine. "Because I have the world's sexiest, smartest, down-to-earth girlfriend. I am the luckiest man on the planet, and now the entire world knows it. The entire world knows you're mine."
