She had never been more grateful for her stubborn parents than she was today. When she had moved to Korea, her parents had insisted that whatever car she purchased needed to be 4WD. Going up the winding roads in Hannam-Dong, she was certain she wouldn't have made it in a small sedan.
She truly enjoyed the scenery of Seoul, but she did miss the wide country roads of her hometown and her old Chevy truck that could take on mountains of snow if needed. The roads in Seoul, especially neighborhoods like this one, were steep, windy, and narrow, making her anxiety skyrocket as she drove in the cold weather conditions.
As she got deeper into the neighborhood, the roads improved, and the visit with her first patient had been a success. The patient was a famous fashion designer in Korea, Nang Yi-Jae. Entering her home had been one of the greatest sights she had seen in Korea so far. The apartment Yi-Jae was living in was custom designed by her. Every wall and light was fabulously detailed and colorful, with all sorts of different patterns on the walls, and she had accented the large space with abstract furniture.
Yi-Jae was an eccentric woman, her large goggle-like glasses framing her pale face. She was chatty and wanted to constantly be talking. She did her best to keep up with Yi-Jae's high energy and enthusiasm as they worked on her exercises. The care Yi-Jae needed was post-operative from her carpal tunnel surgery, which she had gotten from years of intricate work at a sewing machine.
Yi-Jae had a positive personality, only huffing and complaining once or twice about the annoyance the surgery had caused in putting her work on hold for a bit. She only had three more weeks of physical therapy, and then she could get back to doing what she loved. The visit was long because of the chatting, but the actual workload was minimal compared to what she had been handling for the last several months.
Her second patient was an older gentleman, Ro Sang-Chol, a retired CEO of a large cosmetics company in Korea. He and his wife lived in an extravagant home in the neighborhood, with a timeless European-inspired style throughout the property. He had gentle gray eyes and only wisps of white hair left on his balding head. His wife, Su-Mi, did most of the speaking for him during the visit. Sang-Chol had a double knee replacement surgery a few weeks before, and the recovery was steady but slow. He didn't have much energy due to his age, so they did all the exercises they could, restocked his prescriptions, and then she was on her way.
When she got in her car to type in the address for her third and final patient, she noticed it was barely noon. At this rate, she would be off a few hours early, a prospect she hadn't ever experienced in this line of work. Nam-Gi had the greatest route of all of them, and she never said a word about the amazing perks of this area. She knew Ji-Sun would be filled with envy once she told her about her workday when she got home.
She read the instructions for how to access the apartment three times, making sure she didn't miss any of the detailed points. She soon pulled into UN Village, catching a glimpse of the Han River even from the parking lot. She found the designated parking spot in the parking garage, stall 23, and parked her rundown Hyundai between a lavish neon green Lamborghini and a bright cherry red Mercedes. She already felt incredibly out of place.
She texted the phone number provided in the chart to let them know she had arrived. The receiver responded almost immediately.
UNKNOWN NUMBER: COME ON UP.
She found the elevator and typed in the code given in the instructions. 0507. The elevator closed and took her to the top floor, opening to a single door for the entire floor. She knocked gently on the door, curiosity filling her as she wondered who would answer.
A man opened the door right away. His stature was tall, his dark eyes twinkling, and his shoulder-length wavy hair purposefully disheveled. The man wore a casual black polo and black jeans, with the rest of his face covered by a black mask.
