POV: Adeline
"I thought the next family meet up wasn't for another four months?"
"My mother decided she wanted to make it sooner, probably to see more of you," Evane says as she keeps cooking, trying to ignore my whining.
Evane's mother has actually been calling weekly just to talk to me, which I honestly don't mind but it does seem to be irritating Evane. Since her mother doesn't have my number yet so she keeps calling Evane's phone to talk to me.
Only during the most recent phone calls has Evane's mother actually spoken to her daughter, but I don't know about what. Evane only told me it was a surprise.
"Well, I'm going to take Bambi out on a small walk to wear him out before everyone gets here," I sigh, getting bored since Evane refuses to let me help her with the cooking.
Even when I'm just helping I end up burning whatever Evane is trying to cook so she doesn't let me do much. My only responsibility is cutting the vegetables and then I'm not allowed in the kitchen.
"Okay. Don't go too far," Evane reminds me.
Usually she goes with me on walks ever since I told her about feeling like I was being watched, but nothings happened since so she isn't as strict about me going out alone anymore. I'm still slightly on edge but I'll be fine.
I call out for Bambi and he immediately comes running, his tail frantically wagging behind him, making his whole body wiggle.
So cute!
I've had him for almost two years now and he's definitely not such a puppy anymore but the way he behaves still makes me coo over him as if he were still the little thing I rescued from a cardboard box.
I pet him and rub his fur, using my baby voice to get him excited and want to follow me to the front door. He gets even more excited when he sees me grab his harness and leash, running circles around me.
He stops to let me put his harness on and clip on the leash, barely giving me a chance to grab my phone and keys before pulling me out the door.
"I'll be back in about ten minutes," I call out before closing the door behind me, just about hearing Evane yell goodbye before the door closes.
I take a deep breath of the fresh air before starting to walk along the path, Bambi obediently walking by my side, already knowing the route after just a few turns. I don't like exploring when I go on walks with Bambi, especially when I know I have to be back in time.
Bambi sniffs around a little, his tail lightly wagging as we walk, waving to a few of the neighbours that I regularly see tending to their gardens during walks with Bambi. They recognise me and I recognise them, even though we've never spoken.
As I walk down to the park really close by, that odd feeling returns again – the feeling of eyes burning into my back, watching everything I do.
Though when I turn around there's no one there. There isn't even any cars parked on the road someone could be in watching me.
Trying to brush it off, I keep walking Bambi, starting to notice his odd behaviour. He's sticking close by my legs and walking slightly fast, tugging on his leash to get me to walk faster, which I don't fight.
As we leave the park after taking a shorter route than I had planned, my phone starts ringing. When I check, relief washes over me for a second as I see Evane's contact.
I immediately pick it up, trying not to sound anxious as I greet her.
"Are you nearly back yet? My mother's here early and practically begging for you," Evane sighs.
