I knocked on the front door of the O'Connell residence. Maggie immediately opened the door, smiling widely when she saw me. "Oh dear, it's great to see you, hon. You've been gone for so long."
"I know. I'm sorry, Maggie. I've been... busy." I hesitated for a moment before letting out a breath. "Finneas texted me about his concerns for Billie. Can I see her?"
"Mhm, yes. She's in her room." She kissed my forehead and I walked my way through the house I practically grew up in. I knew this place like the back of my hand. "Oh, wait, Y/N."
I turned around and faced Maggie. "Yes?"
"Here." She handed me a small plate with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on it. "She hasn't eaten in days, please try to get her to at least have a bite."
"I'll try my best, ma'am."
I pushed the bedroom door open to find the usual scene of messiness but something about it felt different. It wasn't comforting anymore, it concerned me more than anything now.
"William?" I had called her this since we were 14. She found it annoying, I found it funny. I looked in her bathroom door after setting the plate of food down on her dresser. "Oh my god, Billie."
It wasn't shock nor was it fear in my voice. It wasn't disappointment either. It was acceptance of what had happened.
I watched her arm blood drop to the tile of the floor, her tears streaming down her face as she tried to wipe it on her shirt but each time, she winced. I crouched down as I lifted her shirt over her head.
"I got you, bubs." I wet a rag and dabbed her arm lightly. "Where's the ointment, baby?"
Billie weakly nodded towards the cabinet. I opened it and grabbed the cleaning ointment as well as the peroxide to clean the cuts. "You're not mad at me?"
I smiled lightly, sitting in front of her as our legs intertwined. "Never, Bil. You're my best friend. I could never be mad at you for this." I began to clean her arm up, placing a kiss to her forehead so she didn't think too much of the pain. "Remember the times you've done this for me, yeah?"
"I thought you'd be mad." Billie quietly admitted. Her head crashed back against the sink she was leaning up against. Her breathing was slow and steady, which was a good sign.
"Never, sweetie. Never."
After cleaning her up completely, the cuts weren't too deep for stitches but I did need to reapply ointment every hour for her. I grabbed the gauze roll and wrapped it around her arm, gently bobby pinning it to stay on.
"I have to check your cuts every hour so you don't get infected, okay?" I gently talked Billie through it, taking her hands in mine.
"I'm so sorry." Billie broke down crying again, falling against my chest. Her limp, weak body crashing against me. I held her head, kissing her forehead.
"It's okay, love. Truly. Never be sorry for it." I whispered softly in her ear. "This shit happens, Bil, you and I both know that. Just tell me, please. It's easier for us to handle it together than alone."
