Jay had always prided himself on never losing a bet. It wasn’t arrogance—just sheer confidence that he could win anything. So when Heeseung, Sunghoon, Jungwon, and Niki dared him to make Kim Sunoo, the cold and mysterious genius freshman, fall for him in 143 days, he didn’t hesitate. It was just a challenge, right? After all, how hard could it be to charm someone as seemingly distant as Sunoo?

Heeseung had smirked, nudging him with his shoulder. "You’re the one with the lowest GPA, Jay. Prove you’re not just a pretty face."

Jay rolled his eyes. "I’ll show you. Easy."

The first few days were frustrating. Sunoo didn’t show any signs of interest, nor did he give Jay the time of day. He always seemed lost in thought, focused on his work. But that’s what Jay had underestimated—how intelligent and mysterious Sunoo was. People said he had the IQ of a senior even though he was just a freshman. He could breeze through subjects with a kind of effortless grace Jay could never hope to replicate.

Jay tried everything—smooth compliments, study dates, small gestures—but Sunoo remained unphased, his expression as neutral as ever. It didn’t help that Jake, his own friend and Sunoo’s older brother, had no idea about the bet. Jay found himself constantly walking a tightrope between being the charming, teasing guy he was, and the one who had to win Sunoo over.

"What's your plan, Jay?" Jungwon asked one afternoon, raising an eyebrow as he watched Jay try (and fail) to make Sunoo smile.

Jay leaned back in his chair, frustrated. "I don’t get it. Why isn’t he reacting? Everything I do... nothing works."

Heeseung laughed from the corner. "Maybe you’re trying too hard. Sunoo’s not some shallow person who’ll fall for flashy moves."

But that was the problem, wasn’t it? Jay had always relied on his looks, his charm, his reputation. Sunoo, however, wasn’t interested in any of that. He was different from the people Jay usually flirted with. Smart, reserved, and a little bit mysterious, Sunoo had an aura of calm that Jay couldn't quite crack.

Days passed, and Jay couldn’t help but notice how Sunoo carried himself. He wasn’t just cold; he was thoughtful. It wasn’t until Jay accidentally caught a glimpse of Sunoo solving a complex problem on a whiteboard in the library that he realized just how brilliant Sunoo was. His mind worked in ways that Jay could barely comprehend, a level of intellect that made Jay feel out of his depth.

But there was something else—something softer. Whenever Sunoo spoke to someone, especially animals (Jay had witnessed Sunoo's gentle nature when he helped a stray cat on campus), it was clear that there was more to him than the silent, intense exterior.

By the time they were 60 days into the bet, Jay had stopped trying to "make" Sunoo fall for him. Instead, he started learning about him—his favorite books, his thoughts on the world, his passions. They started sharing quiet moments together in the library, talking about the subjects that fascinated Sunoo. To Jay’s surprise, Sunoo’s reserved nature opened up in those discussions, and Jay found himself enchanted by his intelligence, his depth, and, most unexpectedly, his kindness.

And then, somewhere along the way, Jay realized something that shook him: he was falling for Sunoo, too.

It wasn’t a dramatic moment, no grand gesture. It was subtle, a slow realization that maybe the cold and mysterious Sunoo wasn’t the person he’d set out to win over, but the person he wanted to be close to. To understand. To love. Jay wasn’t just playing a game anymore.

The last 43 days were the hardest. Jay knew what the bet meant, but he no longer cared about winning. He cared about Sunoo, about being the person Sunoo could trust, admire, and maybe even love.
