"Screw the book, are you okay?" he asked as he sat up. "I didn't mean to startle you."
"Oh, um, yes I am fine. I thought I could reach it, I'll do better next time, I'm sorry," Heidi began mumbling at first before trying to explain and apologize for acting rashly. 'Why isn't he upset over his books?' This wasn't making any sense.
"Don't worry about it," he shook his head. "I couldn't tell you how many times I or the guys have done that. And besides if something did happen to the book, Gabe would just fix it up. He actually has a pile he is fixing from us dropping them or just reading them so much. Books are meant to be read, which means they are meant to get damaged in one way or another, that's how you know they are appreciated. Now are you okay? That was a pretty hard fall."
"Who fell?" Both turned to see Axel standing in the entrance. "What happened?"
"Rolling ladder needs to be looked at," Kota said as he stood while gently helping Heidi to her feet. "She lost her balance and I rushed to catch her, making us both fall."
"Go see Sean," Axel nodded. "I'll get North, Silas, or Brandon to check the ladder."
"Yes Sir," Kota nodded. "Come on, Heidi Girl, let's go get checked out by Doc and I'll have Core show you the book catalog on one of our laptops."
"But, I'm f-fine," she said as she looked to the ground clutching at her elbow that was holding the book to her chest. "I fell on you."
"We both fell so Doc is going to insist on checking on both of us," Kota explained. "He'd rather make sure it's nothing then find out later on it's something that he could have treated earlier on. Let's just give him peace of mind, huh?"
"If you insist," she mumbled. "But I'm really f...fine."
"Then it wouldn't hurt for him to check on you real quick and give the all clear. Otherwise he will continue to worry if something is wrong. You don't want him going mother-hen on you. He will follow you around to verify or analyze what could be ailing you. Plus, I'm sure your brother will be worried once he finds out and with Sean giving the all clear will put his worries to rest," Axel calmly explained as he rested a hand on her shoulder.
"O-okay," she quietly agreed with a small nod. What she didn't see was the knowing glance Kota sent to Axel from the trick of her brother's concern to get her to see Sean.
Kota led the way after Axel said that Sean was in his office. "Oh and Luke called to say he is on his way back so by the time you are done seeing Doc he should be home."
It was silent as they made their way through the halls. Upon reaching Sean's office, Kota knocked on the door twice before a faint "Come in" was called out. Opening the door, Sean was at his desk working through a file before looking up.
With a beaming smile Sean said, "Well this is a surprise! What brings the both of you here? I thought you were showing her the library?"
"Need you to look at us, Doc," Kota said as he guided Heidi to the couch by her elbow as it seemed she wasn't going to move from the threshold. "Heidi Girl took a tumble from the ladder and I broke her fall. Just want to make sure we're both okay even though we feel fine. Put everyone's mind to rest."
"I really f-feel fine. It's K-Kota that needs a look over more than me," Heidi meekly said as she hugged the book she still was carrying in her hands.
"Now Sweet Girl, although I believe a person knows their body best, I agree with Kota here on getting a quick check up to help put everyone's minds to rest. I will make sure the both of you are well so no future ailments will arise in future," Sean explained as he knelt in front of her. "Can you give Kota the book to hold? Which one is it?"
Sean took in her wince as she held the book out before she masked it but didn't say anything so she would relax more for him. "Book b...been wanting to read l...long time," she mumbled as he slipped off Gabe's hoodie.
"Oh, is this the one with the dragon princes and their human soulmate?" Kota asked as he turned it over to read the back. "Oh yeah, I remember this one, it's one of Luke and Gabe's favorites. You'll like it."
"They?" she looked up at him shocked.
"Yes Sweet Girl," Sean chuckled, "we all like to read." After looking them over, he removed his gloves. "I think both of you are okay. Might have some bruises appearing from the fall but nothing serious. But let's take it a little more easy than we originally had to planned just to be on the safe side, okay?"
"Thanks Doc," Axel nodded from the doorway. "Luke just pulled up."
"I'll go help him," Kota nodded. "Go with Axel, he'll show you back to the living room."
Axel put his hand on her lower back and smirked as he watched her hold the book to her chest. "Here sit here and I'll get you a bookmark," he said as he led her over to the rocking chair.
"There you are!" Luke beamed as he entered the room with multiple bags in his hands. "I got surprises for you two!"
"What?" she gasped.
"Fank you!" Liam bounced on the couch.
"Wait until everyone is in here first," Owen said as he sat at his desk. Once everyone was sitting down he nodded, "proceed."
"Here, Lil Man," Luke beamed as he sat a few bags in front of the child. "I think you'll like it."
"Hi Hi LOOK!" Liam squealed as he pulled out a soft fuzzy blanket that had dinosaurs all over it. "DINOS! FANK YOU FANK YOU FANK YOU!"
"You're welcome," Luke chuckled as Liam threw himself at him for a huge hug. "You got more."
"Wow!" Heidi gasped as Liam pulled out a full dino bed set then dino stuffed animals of various kinds and even a dino lamp. "We'll need to wash it all first, okay?"
"I'll wash it as soon as you are finished opening your surprise," Gabe nodded.
"It's not just bathroom stuff?" she asked in confusion.
"Nope Cupcake, you got a surprise too," Luke chuckled.
Liam finished giving all the men hugs and telling them thank you then went and sat back down to start playing with his new dino stuffed animals. Heidi gave him a bewildered look then gasped as she pulled out a bunny rabbit stuffed animal. It was softer than anything she had ever felt and was multicolored like a rainbow tie dye. There was a sparkle in the eyes and bows on the ears. She held it up to her face and nuzzled it with a soft smile on her lips.
"You wike, Hi Hi?" Liam asked as he felt the bunny. "Oh sooo softy."
"It is," she nodded. "I love it." She raised her gaze to the men, "Thank you."
"You're very welcome," they murmured as they watched her go back to nuzzling the stuffed animal. An odd sense of peace settled in them as they watched her.
Gabe cleared his throat then stood and gathered the bedding so he could wash it. Corey turned on the TV and opened the Disney app, "how about a movie?"
